A smart traffic light trial has started at the Jalan Salim/Jalan Bukit Penyau T-junction in Sibu. Trial operations started at about 8am on Wednesday. Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the lights use sensors to detect vehicles. If no vehicles are waiting to exit Jalan Bukit Penyau, traffic along Jalan Salim can continue moving. What drivers should know The system is still being fine-tuned. Chieng said several adjustments are needed, including extending the lane and relocating a streetlight pole so vehicles turning into Jalan Bukit Penyau do not block straight-moving traffic. A temporary drainage fix is coming to the KUTS project site along Jalan Tun Jugah after nearby residents raised flash-flood concerns. Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the issue came from residents around Jalan Durian Burung, near the Federal Staff Quarters. They were worried that an existing roadside open drain had been buried and replaced with metal pipes that were too small, possibly worsening flash floods in an area already known to flood. Yap said the contractor agreed to further widen the outlet while waiting for the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which is expected to arrive in early August. Once TBM works begin, the underground crossing below Jalan Tun Jugah is expected to be completed by October, allowing a more permanent drainage solution after that. Kuching's RM2.6 billion flood mitigation project is back in the spotlight, after a call for MBKS to use its RM300 million reserves. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng questioned whether that reserve fund could realistically cover a project of that size. Sarawak JKR is set to host MyBIM Malaysia at its BIM Laboratory, after signing an MoU with the Works Ministry. Samarahan Division’s RM150 million electricity upgrade is moving ahead, with 106 MVCC poles already installed. The old structure collapsed on Sept 5, 2023, disrupting a daily route used by residents from Kampung Muhibbah, Pinggan Jaya and nearby areas. Women, Family and Community Development Minister and Santubong MP Dato Sri Nancy Shukri said the RM600,660 upgrading project is now almost 90 per cent complete. Why it matters The jetty is not just a small facility. For about 200 users, including students, workers, boat operators and nearby residents, the crossing over Sungai Sarawak is a faster and cheaper option than making a longer road detour through Samarahan. Nancy said only about 12 to 13 metres of work remain, including two bays and staircases. Weather is the main challenge, but the project is still expected to finish on schedule. The project is implemented by the Sarawak Rivers Board and includes demolition, piling, jetty works, concrete works, street lighting and a marine lantern. The new road will link the two villages in the Kedup constituency and benefit 3,653 residents from seven villages. Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the project is being carried out under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), with construction handled by JKR Serian Division. Once completed, the route between Kampung Mayang Kawan and Kampung Mentung Mubuk is expected to drop from 28.4km to 8.7km. Travel time should also fall from around 35 minutes to about 10 minutes. The road is also expected to improve access to three primary schools, agricultural areas and basic services, while reducing transport costs for rural communities.
