Sarawak’s urban water coverage has passed 99 per cent, but the rural figure stands at 72 per cent, leaving a substantial gap behind the statewide infrastructure spending totals. Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah Embas gave the figures during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Oct 21, DayakDaily reported. He said RM3.231 billion had been spent as of September under the Water Supply Grid Programme for Stressed Areas, which involves overall investment of about RM4 billion. A further RM1.085 billion allocation was identified for replacing ageing pipes, with 237.68 kilometres already replaced. That is a separate progress measure from coverage: the length of pipe renewed does not say which remaining communities have gained a connection. Uggah also reported 99.7 per cent electricity coverage statewide and 99.3 per cent in rural areas under the Rural Electrification Scheme. Spending under that scheme had reached RM2.178 billion by the third quarter of 2026. The two utility figures show that rural electricity coverage and water coverage are at very different stages. For rural households, the water figure is a coverage benchmark, not a promise of a connection date or uninterrupted supply at a particular address. The update did not set out a village-by-village timetable for closing the remaining gap.

Nearly half of school-going children in Sarawak’s first Child Wellbeing Index study lacked adequate access to learning devices, even as 95.5 per cent of the children surveyed said they enjoyed learning. The preliminary findings put access and actual skills alongside school participation. More than one in three children fell below the study’s benchmark for mathematical proficiency, while one in four did not meet its literacy benchmark. These are findings about the children surveyed, not a count of every child in Sarawak. Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah presented the findings at a press conference in Kuching on Oct 22. UNICEF’s survey involved 3,124 children and examined seven dimensions of wellbeing, covering matters such as economic circumstances, education, family relationships and access to information technology. The device gap was particularly apparent among older adolescents and children in Sri Aman and Serian, Suara Sarawak reported. That gives education planners a more specific challenge than simply getting children into classrooms: whether they have the tools and foundational skills to use learning opportunities. Fatimah said the findings would help agencies identify needs by area and plan more targeted interventions. The results remain preliminary; the briefing was about planning policy and programmes, not the launch of an individual device-grant application scheme.

People around Sejingkat Bridge should keep away from exposed or damaged electrical cables after cable theft damaged parts of the bridge’s electrical system, JKR Sarawak said on Oct 23. The Public Works Department said the damage affected electrical components and public infrastructure in the vicinity of the newly completed bridge. It warned that interference with those systems could put road users at risk and disrupt the operation of the facilities. Its advice is specific: do not approach, touch or handle damaged cables or electrical equipment. Members of the public who notice suspicious activity involving wiring, electrical equipment or nearby public facilities should report it promptly to the authorities. JKR said it would monitor infrastructure under its supervision and work with the relevant authorities. The statement did not give a repair timetable or announce a bridge closure; the electrical damage should not be read as a finding that the bridge structure is unsafe. The department also warned that replacing stolen cables and repairing damaged components adds to the cost of maintaining public assets. No loss figure was given.

Another 522 participants have obtained B2 motorcycle licences through the Miri parliamentary service centre’s driving-licence assistance programme. The centre says more than 2,700 people have qualified since the scheme began in 2024. The latest group received their licences at a presentation ceremony last week, The Borneo Post reported on Oct 23. The 522 figure refers to that group; the larger total is the programme’s cumulative reach, not a second batch of new recipients. Miri MP and Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man said in a statement that the programme was intended to make licensing more affordable, particularly for people in need, and help them access employment and additional income. This is a report of completed licences, rather than an announcement of a new application round. No new registration deadline or exact participant fee accompanied the update. Chiew also reminded recipients to obey traffic rules and wear a properly fastened, Sirim-approved helmet: the assistance lowers the barrier to obtaining a licence, but does not remove a rider’s road-safety responsibilities.

Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) plans 10 exploratory oil and gas wells across nine promising onshore areas, with an estimated investment of RM500 million. Balingian, Limbang-Lawas, Marudi and Niah are the named drilling areas. The programme was outlined in the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment’s winding-up at the State Legislative Assembly on Oct 21, DayakDaily reported. It is intended to identify new reserves using advanced technology. The nine areas and 10 wells describe an exploration programme, not nine confirmed discoveries or 10 producing wells. Likewise, RM500 million is the estimated investment attached to the plan, rather than a reported sum already spent. The state also identified Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu and Kuching as gas-development hubs. That is a separate geographical list: Kuching’s inclusion as a hub does not put one of the announced onshore drilling areas in the city. For Sarawak engineering, fabrication, maintenance and logistics firms, the ministry linked wider oil and gas development to potential work opportunities and local participation. Those prospects remain different from contracts already awarded; the update did not set out individual well start dates or tender openings.

Kuching’s Chung Hua Middle School No. 4 is earmarked to move from Jalan Haji Taha in Satok to a new campus in the Stampin Resettlement Scheme. The latest update concerns land and relocation support, not an immediate transfer of classes. Deputy Premier Dr Sim Kui Hian said the state had reserved a parcel of land for the school and was providing compensation and grants to help with the move, The Borneo Post reported on Oct 22. No relocation date, campus completion target or amount for that support was set out. Sim spoke at a flood-mitigation project groundbreaking in the resettlement scheme. That ceremony should not be confused with the start of construction on the school’s future campus. The school has separately told families that the new site remains a planning project and that teaching will continue at the existing campus in the meantime, according to See Hua Daily News. It said a move would be arranged only when the new site has complete teaching and administrative facilities. For parents considering enrolment, the important distinction is between a site reserved for future expansion and the campus where classes are being held now. The land-and-support announcement does not itself change the school’s present address.

Start with the low tiled roof and the pond, not the medical instruments. At Lau King Howe Hospital Memorial Museum in Sibu, the surviving hospital frontage sits against much larger modern buildings. I would give that contrast a moment before going inside: this is a small piece of a healthcare campus that once served a much wider river town, not a complete hospital frozen in time. Lau King Howe came to Sibu in 1916 and ran a rubber plantation. In 1930, he offered his property to help establish a modern hospital for a town whose earlier, small hospital could no longer keep up. Construction began in 1931; the new hospital was completed in 1936. Lau died in 1932, before he could see it finished. That gap between giving and completion makes the name above the entrance more than a donor’s label: it belongs to a public service he helped make possible but never saw operating. For a visitor trying to understand Sibu beyond trade and the waterfront, this is the interesting change of scale. A plantation fortune became beds, treatment rooms and a place where families sought care. The hospital’s reach extended beyond the town itself into central Sarawak’s communities. Its story sits alongside the region’s river connections, not apart from them. I would look for the campus model before trying to take in every display. Its roofs and labels make the old layout legible: outpatient services, pharmacy and casualty were parts of a working system. Compare that spread with the compact museum around you. Much of the hospital campus has gone; the model helps explain what the present building alone cannot show. Services shifted away, while local associations, medical professionals and tourism representatives worked to preserve the old institution’s memory. The memorial museum opened in 1996, using adapted outpatient/specialist-clinic premises. It was a community preservation project, not simply a collection of equipment left behind after a move. That is how I would approach the surgical display. The lamp, trolley and equipment are worth examining, but the question is not just whether they look old. Ask how a small hospital organised the practical work of caring for a growing population. The museum’s artefacts include donations from former doctors, nurses, pharmacists and administrators; the objects are also traces of their working lives. Books, containers and dispensing equipment show another side of hospital work: keeping track, preparing medicines and getting them to the right place. Rather than treating every cabinet as a technical test, I would pick one familiar activity—collecting medicine, waiting for a consultation, accompanying a relative—and follow how the exhibits make its earlier form visible. You do not need a medical background to recognise how much ordinary life passed through this institution. Someone expecting a large interactive science museum may find it too small and text-led. Allowing roughly 45 minutes is my planning suggestion, not a fixed tour duration; leave more time if the photographs and displays connect with your own family’s story. From Kuching, I would include it in an overnight Sibu trip rather than make the long journey for this museum alone. Within Sibu, combine it with the town-square and waterfront area, then leave time for the Central Market or Heritage Centre on their own opening schedules. The museum adds the healthcare chapter that a market-and-river walk would otherwise miss. The address is Jalan Lau King Howe, 96000 Sibu. Admission is free, with donations welcome. RM2.6 million has been allocated to the federal Youth and Sports Ministry for sports-facility upgrades in Sarawak in 2027, but that is not a confirmed RM2.6 million project award for Julau. TVS reported the allocation following a Dewan Rakyat reply on Oct 22. Proposals to build or upgrade facilities in the Julau parliamentary constituency must first be coordinated with the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department and the state government before the ministry considers them. For owners of existing facilities, the next step is a formal application with supporting details: the site’s ownership status, a report on its current condition, the proposed work and an estimated cost. The ministry also assesses local need, the people using the facility, site suitability and who can manage and maintain it after completion. That maintenance test matters for community courts and grounds: the assessment is not just about paying for construction, but whether the facility can remain usable afterwards. It is the owning agency that must submit the application; the reply does not announce a cash-grant application for individual residents. Larger development proposals require state-level coordination and prioritisation before going through the Youth and Sports Ministry to the Economy Ministry. The parliamentary answer sets out that route, rather than a final list of Sarawak sites or a construction start date.

Sarawak now has a Platinum-rated product under Malaysia Tourism Quality Assurance, with Borneo Empurau Farm & Resort becoming the state’s first recipient of the programme’s highest tier. DayakDaily’s Oct 22 report puts the result in a wider picture: 116 tourism products nationwide have MyTQA recognition, including 10 in Sarawak. Thirty across Malaysia have attained Platinum. Those figures describe recognised tourism products—not the total number of resorts or attractions operating in the state. Two other Sarawak recipients were Lambir Hills National Park and Loagan Bunut National Park in Miri. Both received Silver recognition following reassessment and are managed by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation. Their recognition is a separate result from the resort’s Platinum award. MyTQA is run by the federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. It has Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, with assessments covering product quality, facilities and service standards. That gives visitors a clearer basis for understanding what the label refers to, rather than reading Platinum as a description of every service or attraction in Sarawak. The recognition ceremony took place on Oct 22. Operators were urged to keep improving their standards after receiving an award, making continued service quality—not just the presentation ceremony—the longer-term test.

A completed feasibility study for the proposed New Kuching International Airport is part of the backdrop to fresh transport discussions between Sarawak and the Netherlands—not an announcement that airport construction has begun. The report places that earlier work alongside talks on aviation, airport development and green hydrogen during a Dutch ambassadorial visit to the Sarawak Ministry for Transport. Sarawak is interested in experience from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and its surrounding aerotropolis, where airport activity connects with wider business development. The Netherlands also outlined a three-year industry cooperation programme involving companies and relevant agencies, aimed at technical exchanges, business participation and investment opportunities. For Kuching, the other link is the Kuching Urban Transportation System. The discussion included its hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit vehicles and supporting hydrogen feeder buses, alongside sustainable public transport, ports and emerging transport technology. These are cooperation discussions. A feasibility study, an industry programme and a construction award are different stages; the reported visit does not announce a new airport opening date or a newly awarded building contract. The practical outcome to follow is which of these exchanges leads to a defined project or agreement.
