Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) plans 10 exploratory oil and gas wells across nine promising onshore areas, with an estimated investment of RM500 million. Balingian, Limbang-Lawas, Marudi and Niah are the named drilling areas. The programme was outlined in the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment’s winding-up at the State Legislative Assembly on Oct 21, DayakDaily reported. It is intended to identify new reserves using advanced technology. The nine areas and 10 wells describe an exploration programme, not nine confirmed discoveries or 10 producing wells. Likewise, RM500 million is the estimated investment attached to the plan, rather than a reported sum already spent. The state also identified Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu and Kuching as gas-development hubs. That is a separate geographical list: Kuching’s inclusion as a hub does not put one of the announced onshore drilling areas in the city. For Sarawak engineering, fabrication, maintenance and logistics firms, the ministry linked wider oil and gas development to potential work opportunities and local participation. Those prospects remain different from contracts already awarded; the update did not set out individual well start dates or tender openings.

PETROS plans another well at Adong Kechil West near Marudi by mid-2027 to supply gas to the combined-cycle power station in Lutong, Miri, Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg said on October 10. The field is in northern Sarawak, not Kuching, where the Premier made the announcement at Padang Merdeka. He also outlined a separate exploration well at Kuala Baram, describing its gas-production potential as encouraging. Exploration potential is not a confirmed commercial gas output. Adong Kechil West is already producing oil. PETROS and PETRA Energy announced first oil from the field’s Early Production System on July 24. The Premier’s latest update put oil production at 800 barrels a day; that existing oil output should not be confused with gas from the proposed additional well. PETROS’s July release said the next development phase would provide facilities and infrastructure for the Miri combined-cycle gas turbine power plant, then targeted for commissioning by the end of 2027. The mid-year well plan and year-end plant target are different milestones. For Miri’s future power supply, the key progress is whether the well, production facilities and connecting infrastructure are delivered, rather than treating a development timetable as electricity already available.

SoftBank, Grab and PETROS have signed a framework agreement to explore an AI and digital-infrastructure platform in Sarawak. The next task is to develop a roadmap for a phased project, not to open an already-built facility. In a statement reported on October 8, the three companies said they would assess opportunities in AI computing and services, advanced technology, robotics, and local workforce and community development. SoftBank would contribute its technology and AI ecosystem, Grab its regional digital networks and applied AI capabilities, and PETROS its energy and infrastructure experience. The agreement is an initial step. The announcement did not give an investment amount, a construction timetable, a specific project site or an opening date. The October 8 document exchange at Satria Pertiwi Complex in Kuching should not be mistaken for the location of the proposed platform. For Sarawak businesses and workers, the useful distinction is between the areas the partners want to explore and projects actually committed to delivery. A more definite picture will depend on the roadmap and scope they develop; no procurement opportunity, recruitment programme or guaranteed job total was announced.

PETROS and Höegh Evi have agreed to jointly develop Kuching's proposed LNG terminal, with first gas targeted for the end of 2029. The agreement, reported on Oct 1, covers joint development, ownership and operation. Plans include a floating storage and regasification unit, mooring facilities, subsea and land pipelines, and an onshore receiving facility. The terminal forms part of the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub. PETROS says it would deliver natural gas to Kuching and surrounding areas, supporting electricity generation and future industrial demand. Truck loading, small-scale LNG distribution, bunkering, storage and reload services are potential uses, not a list of services already operating. For local households and businesses, the important distinction is timing: this is a development agreement, not the start of gas delivery. End-2029 remains a project target. The partners are assessing whether delivery can be accelerated, but have not announced an earlier date.

Talks between PETRONAS and PETROS have moved into the remaining commercial details after the two sides agreed on the fundamental principles, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in Kuching on Sept 16. The government’s stated aim is to protect Sarawak’s interests while retaining PETRONAS’s national role and strengthening PETROS. That is the direction described publicly; the final commercial terms, implementation timetable and financial details have not been announced.
