A RM39.2 million upgrade of the Nanga Ngungun–Nanga Bat road is targeting completion in September 2028, improving a rural link in Sarawak’s Ngemah constituency. The project covers 4.2km of former logging road, to be upgraded to R1 standard. It is one section of the wider Nanga Ngungun–Nanga Jagau route, rather than an upgrade of that entire road. The Borneo Post reported that a commencement ceremony was held at Nanga Ngungun on October 17. The Rural and Regional Development Ministry project is being implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR). For communities along the route, the intended benefit is better access between settlements and to essential services. The September 2028 target sets the delivery timetable for those improvements.

Rural road projects will receive RM2.3 billion within a RM3.3 billion basic-infrastructure package under Budget 2027. Both figures are nationwide allocations, not Sarawak's share. The wider package covers village roads, street lighting, community facilities, clean water and electricity supply. The federal government says the road allocation compares with RM1.3 billion in 2022. Roads therefore account for about 70 per cent of the announced package. For rural Sarawak, the relevant question is which communities and access routes will be included when individual projects are identified. The announcement does not provide a state-by-state breakdown, a Sarawak village list or construction dates. This rural basic-infrastructure package should also be kept separate from the other RM3.3 billion announced for highway projects in Sabah and Sarawak. Identical headline amounts do not make them the same programme, and neither amount should be read as RM3.3 billion awarded solely to Sarawak. The road budget describes planned funding, not completed access improvements. Village-level allocations, contracts and work schedules will show how much of the national package reaches communities in the state.

Farm-access road projects in Kampung Pichin, Kampung Jenan and Kampung Payau Burus have been completed and handed over, with a combined cost of RM450,000. The three Tebedu projects fall under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP). A Sarawak Public Communication Unit report, carried by DayakDaily, records the handover of the sites and project documents to the respective community chiefs at all three locations on October 6. These are agricultural access roads, aimed at helping farmers and smallholders reach their land and move produce out of farms and plantations. They are not an announcement of a new main-road link or a general road upgrade throughout Tebedu. The Serian Department of Irrigation and Drainage was represented at the handovers. RM450,000 is the total for the three projects, not the cost of each road. The report does not give individual road lengths, separate contract values or measured savings in transport time.

A RM95 million upgrade of the Kampung Semeru–Kampung Kuhom link road has begun, with completion targeted for May 2028. The route serves nine villages in the Tebedu and Tarat constituencies. The project is under the Greater Kuching Coordinating Development Agency (GKCDA), with Sarawak’s Public Works Department (JKR) implementing the work. Its stated construction period is 24 months. The upgrade is more than resurfacing: it includes work to JKR R3 standards, realignment of hazardous sections and bends, new road sections, drainage and related structures. These are the changes intended to improve access to facilities and local economic activities once the project is completed. The villages covered are Kampung Semeru, Kampung Bukit Nanas, Kampung Plaman Dunuk, Kampung Senah Rayang, Kampung Padus Stubot, Kampung Bisira Rayang, Kampung Kuhom Mawang, Kampung Kuhom Mandeg and Kampung Rudan. An earth-breaking ceremony was held in Semeru on September 30. The May 2028 date is the project’s completion target, not an announcement that the improved route is already ready for use.

Sarawak is upgrading former logging roads so remote communities can reach clinics by land instead of relying on helicopter services for routine healthcare access. The road push includes routes in Baram and Marudi, with about 142 kilometres of JKR R3-standard roads and a much wider network planned statewide. Reports from DayakDaily and The Borneo Post put the broader completion target between 2030 and 2032, depending on the project scope. The policy matters beyond travel time: a road is available day and night, while air services depend on aircraft, weather and operating conditions. The state has not said that helicopters will disappear immediately. The next useful measure will be which stretches are funded, opened and connected to clinics and longhouses in each remote district.

The RM170 million Menalun–Sungai Poi road project in Kanowit is moving into Phase 3, but the full route is still targeted for completion only in 2030. Phases 1 and 2 have been completed. The latest phase began with a groundbreaking on Aug 29 and involves a 3.6-kilometre road through hilly terrain. It carries an allocation of RM46.11 million and a contract value of RM39.96 million, and does not include bridges or extend as far as the school. Phase 4 remains at the design stage. The RM58.4 million allocation covers another 2.6 kilometres and two bridges, with the planned route connecting Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Poi and the longhouses Rumah Panjang Gani and Rumah Panjang Tarang. The project is meant to improve access for remote communities and essential services, but the 2030 date is a completion target that depends on the remaining phases being delivered. The road should not be treated as a fully open connection yet; the next milestones are Phase 3 progress and a firm construction plan for Phase 4.

Sarawak approves RM6 million road to Nanga Kapu in Batang Ai Sarawak has allocated RM6 million to build a road to Nanga Kapu, with the announcement made at the Batang Ai Community Engagement Programme in Lubok Antu on Aug 28. The project is intended to improve access for remote residents travelling to essential services and economic opportunities. The announcement did not include the road’s length, final route or a construction timetable, so the funding is not yet an indication that a new road is open for use. The next milestones are the design work, tender and appointment of a contractor. The construction schedule will become clearer once those steps are completed.

500km of Kakus logging roads earmarked for upgrades About 500km of logging roads in interior Kakus has been identified for phased upgrading, with the aim of improving access for communities that still lack reliable road connectivity. The roads named in the latest update include Jalan Penyarai, Jalan Sungai Muput, the route to Ulu Kakus, Jalan Sangan–Nanga Merit and Jalan Nanga Takan. The figure is part of roughly 5,700km of logging roads across Sarawak identified for upgrading. This is an identification and planning update, not a promise that all 500km will be rebuilt at once. The works are expected to be phased because of cost and difficult interior terrain; no start dates, tender packages or completion targets for the five routes were announced in the update. For people travelling in Kakus, the practical point is to expect uneven conditions to remain while each phase is prepared. Smaller repairs are already being supported through Rural Transformation Project allocations, but residents and transport operators should check JKR Sarawak’s tender and road notices and allow extra time on rural routes until work notices are issued.
