One hundred villages across Bintulu, Sebauh and Tatau are receiving a combined 300 fire extinguishers through an MLNG community-safety initiative. DayakDaily reported the donation on Oct 28, citing TVS coverage of the Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd HSE Community Programme in Bintulu that day. The programme addressed industrial safety, emergency procedures and the community’s role in preparedness. The equipment total covers the three areas together. It should not be read as 300 units for each village or as confirmation that every household is being supplied. The report did not give a village-by-village allocation. MLNG emphasised that safety awareness needs to be sustained through accurate information, continued training and organised action, with industry, government, educational institutions and communities working together. For the participating villages, the practical value is a combination of equipment and understanding how emergency arrangements work. The donation does not by itself establish that every resident has completed training, nor is the programme a notice of an industrial accident or a current evacuation.

Bintulu Port Holdings has launched a shared digital procurement marketplace connecting its subsidiaries with more than 250 suppliers. The platform replaces paper-based quotations with catalogue-based purchasing and links to the group's existing BePRO system. Buyers can compare prices and delivery lead times, while orders are tracked from purchase order through goods receipt to invoice. Under the arrangement reported by The Borneo Post on October 13, Koperasi Pelabuhan Bintulu Bhd (KOPELA) acts as the sole master vendor and Borong runs the technology. The contract lasts two years, with an option for a further year. Bintulu Port says the suppliers already onboarded include 99 existing registered bidders and 153 Sarawak-based vendors. For local businesses, the change is a digital catalogue channel to reach the group's buyers, not a promise that every registered supplier will receive an order. Specialised maritime services, including vessel supplies, bunkering and maintenance, are described as the next expansion step. They should not be mistaken for services already available on the new marketplace.

Sarawak is still calculating the house types and costs for its planned middle-income housing initiative, with the first pilot intended for Jepak and an area next to Kampung Nyalau in Bintulu. The Premier’s October 3 update identified the second area near Samalaju and said affordability would be tested in Bintulu before the approach was extended elsewhere. Kuching, Miri and Sibu were among the urban areas mentioned for a possible later expansion. For middle-income households in Kuching, that makes this a policy-development update rather than a local housing launch. The remarks did not give a final selling price, application window or construction timetable. The initiative addresses a gap for families who may not qualify for lower-income affordable housing but cannot comfortably buy higher-priced homes. In Bintulu, the Premier identified expensive land and densely developed areas as obstacles that the pilot must address. The idea was first outlined in February, when a RM300,000–RM550,000 price range was being explored. That earlier range is not a newly confirmed October selling price: the current formula is still being worked out, and wider expansion depends on the pilot producing homes within an affordable range.

Bintulu’s first Other Household Waste (OHW) collection campaign was launched at the Civic Centre on Sept 26, alongside Malaysia Cleanup Day. The Bintulu Development Authority joined Sarawak Waste Management, SD Guthrie International and Green Town for the launch. Organisers said people could exchange e-waste and used cooking oil for cash. OHW items weighing under 3kg could be handed in for safe disposal free of charge. The announcement gave no follow-up dates or collection points, so the launch at Civic Centre does not confirm a permanent drop-off service.

Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad has contributed RM802.3 million in dividends to the State Financial Secretary Sarawak and Equisar Assets Sdn Bhd, according to a company appreciation-ceremony update. The figure was announced as the port operator highlighted its operating performance and its role in Sarawak’s trade network. Biport Bulkers was reported to handle about four million tonnes of cargo a year, or roughly a quarter of Sarawak’s total exports. The company also said it was expanding cargo-handling capacity and pursuing sustainability initiatives. A Regional Halal Hub launched last July was cited as one effort to diversify trade opportunities. The dividend figure is a reported contribution, not a promise of future returns. The next practical measure for Sarawak will be whether the operator’s planned capacity expansion translates into stronger services and wider trade activity by 2030.

Repair and rehabilitation works are planned for damaged sections of two roads serving Bintulu Port and the Tanjung Kidurong industrial area. The roads identified by JKR Sarawak are the Jalan Bintulu/Tatau Junction (Mile 5)–Bintulu Port route and Jalan Tanjung Kidurong. Inspections found surface deterioration on several sections, with continuous heavy-vehicle movement cited as one contributing factor. The repair plan will take site conditions, safety requirements and traffic management into account. JKR also says the locations will be monitored during the works and motorists should follow signs and traffic-control instructions. No full closure timetable was announced in the update. For road users, the practical change is to stay alert for work zones around two routes that carry both public traffic and industrial logistics.

Six overtaking lanes have been proposed along the Bintulu-Bakun Road to make a heavily used freight corridor safer. The RM216 million proposal covers about 12km at six locations around KM16, KM39, KM49, KM75, KM106 and KM109 on Federal Route FT803. The Works Ministry says the package would also include related structure upgrades and street lighting. The route carries heavy vehicles serving plantations, logging and other economic activity, while also linking Bintulu and Sebauh with Sungai Asap, Belaga, Bakun and Murum. With no practical alternative route for those lorries, the proposed work is framed as an upgrade to accommodate existing traffic rather than a ban. The proposal has been submitted for consideration under Rolling Plan 2 of the 13th Malaysia Plan. Until a decision and work schedule are announced, motorists should continue to expect the current winding sections, limited visibility and heavy-vehicle movements.

The Medan Jaya–Jalan Tun Hussein Onn flyover in Bintulu is now targeted for completion in July 2027, with physical progress at 89.05%. The latest project update said the work had received three extensions because of construction-site issues, including utility relocation. A major access problem involving the Bintulu district police headquarters has since been resolved, while the contractor has committed to the July target. The 2.6-kilometre package covers upgrades to the surrounding roads, a four-lane two-way flyover and improvements at the Medan Jaya and Taman Tinggi junctions. The finished project is expected to improve peak-hour traffic flow, comfort and safety. July 2027 is a completion target, not an immediate opening promise. Drivers will still need to follow traffic management arrangements and wait for the remaining works and final handover to be completed.

A RM119 million upgrade for 17.1km of Sarawak’s Pan Borneo “redline” sections has entered a 16-month work window, with completion targeted for early 2028. The short-stretch package covers nine locations, including Lachau, Selangau, Balingian, Kemena, Sebiew and Tudan. It will upgrade pavement structures and road-safety features. The contractor received the site on Sept 17, and Sarawak JKR and the Works Ministry will monitor the work. The redline is not one continuous 17.1km route. It refers to 136.74km of sections left out of the original Pan Borneo project. The current package is the 17.1km short stretch; a separate 119.64km long stretch is still being refined for implementation. For Sarawak road users, the useful next check is how work is staged at the nine locations and whether the contractor can beat the 16-month schedule. The update did not include a detailed traffic-management timetable.

Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd has been appointed the approved operator of Bintulu Port for 30 years, under a notification published in the Sarawak Government Gazette. The wholly owned Bintulu Port Holdings subsidiary’s appointment runs from Sept 1, 2026 to Aug 31, 2056. Bintulu Port Authority said the appointment was approved by the Sarawak Legislative Assembly and made under Section 12(2)(a) of the Port Authorities Ordinance 1961. The operator will continue under the terms of a Heads of Agreement until a Port Operation Concession Agreement is executed. That means the 30-year appointment is now gazetted, while the final concession document remains a separate step in the port’s operating framework. For Sarawak, the decision sets the long-term legal and operating basis for one of the state’s major ports. The next material update will be the execution of the concession agreement and its detailed conditions.

Bintulu Port has completed its move from federal to Sarawak administration, with the formal handover held in Kuching on Sept 16. The port’s state status took effect on Sept 1 under the transfer legislation. The handover marks the end of a three-year transition involving the port’s management and government responsibilities, rather than a shutdown of port operations. Transport Minister Anthony Loke handed the documents to Sarawak Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah in a ceremony witnessed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Abang Johari. The agreed takeover value was RM1.8 billion. For businesses using the port, the immediate story is continuity under a new state administration. Future changes to investment, tariffs or operating arrangements will depend on later announcements.

Bintulu Port has officially come under Sarawak’s control, ending its status as a federal port. The transition took effect on Sept 1 after a three-year process, with the port now operating under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak government. The change places one of the state’s key gateways for energy and bulk cargo within the state port system. The immediate message for shippers and businesses is continuity: port operations are expected to continue without disruption during the handover. The longer-term test will be how the new arrangement supports Bintulu’s role in Sarawak’s energy, industrial and export plans. For Sarawak readers, this is an administrative change with practical economic consequences rather than a change of port location or a shutdown. Companies using the port should continue to follow notices issued by Bintulu Port Holdings and the relevant state authorities as the new governance arrangements settle.

Sarawak is pursuing up to US$1 billion in downstream gas investment, with Bintulu identified as the proposed industrial hub. The proposal involves Indorama Ventures and Highchem developing higher-value products from Sarawak’s gas resources. Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg said the plan could support skilled jobs and the state’s move towards lower-carbon industrial development. The money is not committed yet. Sarawak Petchem and the companies are expected to work through the details, with another discussion planned in Bangkok in October. For Bintulu and the wider Sarawak economy, the next milestone is whether those talks produce a defined project, timeline and investment agreement.

Bintulu Port will come under Sarawak management on Sept 1 after a three-year handover process. The change follows the Bintulu Port Authority (Dissolution) Act 2024 taking effect on Aug 31. The transition covered staff, assets, finances and legal matters. The completed arrangements cover the absorption of all BPA employees, the return of some assets to Sarawak and settled compensation for transferred port assets. Bintulu Port has grown from an energy-industry facility into a major trade and LNG gateway over 47 years. The handover changes its jurisdiction and administration; the reports do not announce a port closure. Sarawak's plan to integrate it with the state's other ports, along with any changes port users may see, has not yet been detailed.

Bintulu flood-mitigation work at three sites is targeted to start in October after an extra RM53 million allocation. The package covers remaining Phase Two components at Gem Park, Desa Damai and SJK Sebiew. The Bintulu DID may call the tender in early September, with physical work expected between mid- and late October. A separate long-term study would examine Bintulu’s wider flood-mitigation system, including the capacity of existing measures and where upgrades are needed. Sarawak is considering an international consultancy working with local experts, but the firm, cost and scope are still under discussion. The October date is a target, not a guarantee that flooding will stop. Residents in the affected areas should continue following local warnings during heavy rain while waiting for the tender notice and confirmed work schedule. Location: Bintulu, Sarawak

Miri and Bintulu are set to receive expanded community HIV support under a RM2.25 million, three-year Sarawak allocation. Teratak Kasih Tok Nan, first established in Kuching as a halfway home and support centre, will extend services that include treatment support, temporary shelter, counselling, psychosocial care, treatment monitoring, welfare assistance and community outreach. The expansion brings this support model closer to people living with HIV, their families and other vulnerable groups in the two cities. It is being carried out through a partnership between the Sarawak Government, the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, Sunway Group and Yayasan PETRONAS. It will also complement the Sarawak Health Access Programme (SHAPE), which helps eligible low-income patients with travel costs when they need specialised chronic-care treatment in other cities. The funding has been announced, but the practical details for Miri and Bintulu are still to come: where the services will operate, when they will open and how referrals will be handled. Those details will matter to families planning treatment and travel.

Bintulu-Samalaju has been placed in a global industrial transition network, with Sarawak taking the lead convener role. [image: 1784941486766-bintulu-samalaju-tic.jpg] Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the Bintulu-Samalaju Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TIC) initiative is aimed at pushing the area towards a cleaner, lower-carbon industrial economy. The initiative was formally launched in June as a federal-state partnership involving Sarawak's Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, MyDIGITAL Corporation and the World Economic Forum. What it means for Sarawak The Bintulu-Samalaju corridor is now Malaysia's first member of the World Economic Forum's TIC network. More than 25 companies are involved, with four pilot projects already identified. The initiative is projected to contribute about RM12 billion a year to GDP by 2040 and create nearly 19,000 jobs. Dr Hazland said the plan builds on Sarawak's renewable energy strength, petrochemical base and hydrogen ambitions. Residents at Ing Liing Residence in Bintulu say recurring flash floods are leaving mud, soil and debris around their homes. [image: 1784779576181-bintulu-flood-mud.jpg] Several residents told The Borneo Post the problem has been going on for years, but has become worse after nearby land was converted into a durian farm. They said the floodwater used to be clearer. Now, after heavy rain, it carries mud, soil and wood debris into the housing area. Residents want a long-term fix Resident Sheyha Entik said complaints had been lodged with the Bintulu Development Authority, but residents were told action could not be taken against the durian farm owner because the land is privately owned. Another homeowner, Ting Liong Hung, said the flooding has become more frequent this year, with more than five incidents recorded so far. She said mud left behind after the water recedes affects parking spaces, driveways and daily routines, including work and school trips. Residents are asking the authorities to review drainage, carry out regular desilting, and make sure nearby development does not push the problem back onto the housing area.
