The golden dome of Masjid Bandaraya is easy to photograph, but I would slow down before treating it as scenery. It began as Kuching's nineteenth-century Town Mosque and was once called the Pink Mosque because of its earlier colour. The present building is a later reconstruction and expansion: that change, tied to the city's Muslim community, is the story.

The dome is therefore only the first layer. The place matters because its name, colour and form changed while its religious function continued; visitors can see that continuity in the contrast between a landmark photographed from outside and a congregation using it today.

This is a living mosque, not a museum backdrop. Dress modestly, ask before entering or photographing interiors, and expect access to narrow during prayer, Friday service or events. Early morning or late afternoon suits visitors interested in living faith; anyone wanting a conventional museum may find little to complete.

6月28日凌晨，古晋 Tabuan Hilir 一场火灾烧毁6间住家、另有1间受损，6个家庭共44人失去住所。

砂拉越消拯局于凌晨3时41分接获投报，4分钟后抵达现场。来自 Tabuan Jaya、Padungan 和 Batu Lintang 消防局的28名消拯员，动用5辆消防与救援车辆展开行动。火势在凌晨4时44分受控，行动于早上7时08分结束。

A pre-dawn fire in Tabuan Hilir destroyed six homes and damaged a seventh on June 28, leaving 44 residents from six families without a place to stay.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department received the call at 3.41am and reached the scene four minutes later. Twenty-eight firefighters from Tabuan Jaya, Padungan and Batu Lintang stations responded with five vehicles. The fire was brought under control at 4.44am and the operation ended at 7.08am.

Six non-permanent houses were completely destroyed, while another was about 30 per cent damaged. Three motorcycles were also lost. Everyone escaped safely and no injuries or deaths were reported.

What was confirmed — and what was not

The 44 affected residents included children, but the published reports did not provide a public list of the families or an official donation account. The cause of the fire and estimated losses were still under investigation when the reports were published.

Satok Weekend Market is worth planning around if your idea of travel includes asking what Kuching cooks at home. I would not come looking for polished souvenir aisles. I would come to walk through seasonal fruit, vegetables, dried seafood, plants, snacks and household goods, with enough time to learn what I cannot identify.

The market's own turning point matters: the familiar Satok market moved from old Satok to Medan Niaga Satok at Kubah Ria in Petra Jaya. That is not a minor map correction. It changes the drive, the parking plan and the first impression, while the market's value remains its everyday supply chain—dabai, tarap, durian and other produce appearing with harvest rather than a tourist calendar.

I would make one slow circuit before buying anything. Ask how unfamiliar fruit is eaten, compare a few stalls, and look for dried seafood, belacan, spices, traditional snacks and plants alongside the produce. Busy stalls are usually easier for judging turnover, but prices and stock are seasonal; ask before photographing people or close-up merchandise, and carry small cash even when some sellers accept transfers.

Weekend activity is strongest from Saturday later in the day into Sunday morning, but individual sections can follow different hours. Allow 60–90 minutes, bring a reusable bag and water, and avoid leaving perishables in a hot car. Driving or a pre-arranged ride is more practical than assuming a visitor can improvise transport around Kubah Ria; check the current listing before setting out because market schedules and access can shift.

This is a good stop for food-curious international visitors, cooks, photographers who ask permission and anyone who wants an ordinary Kuching scene. It will disappoint travellers expecting air-conditioned shopping or tidy souvenir displays. I would leave with one unfamiliar ingredient and a better sense of the city's kitchens, which is a more useful souvenir than another generic postcard.

Sabah and Sarawak have agreed to formalise cross-regional economic cooperation in Borneo, marking a strategic push to strengthen trade, investment, and overall regional development.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Ewon Benedick said the agreement was reached after a courtesy call on Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on June 26.

The collaboration will be coordinated between Sabah's Ministry of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship and Sarawak's Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED).

"Sabah needs Sarawak, and Sarawak needs Sabah to ensure this Borneo territory develops more dynamically," Ewon said at the launch of the 17th DCCI-KCCI Gawai-Kaamatan Exhibition and Business Event in Kuching.

He highlighted that Gawai and Kaamatan have grown beyond harvest festivals into economic platforms that link business, culture and community across Borneo.

The two-day exhibition features more than 50 exhibitors from Sabah and Sarawak showcasing handicrafts, agro-based products, food, and creative industries.

SMEs from both states were also encouraged to tap into cross-regional opportunities, explore digital tech, and strengthen networks through business-matching sessions.

Finance Minister II Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the Cabinet approved the expansion as part of several enhancements to ensure a smoother transition to the targeted diesel subsidy mechanism.

Sarawak's vast geography and heavy reliance on diesel transport make the federal government's 200-litre monthly subsidy cap unworkable, says social activist Voon Shiak Ni.

Speaking on Friday (June 27), Voon said the Budi Madani Diesel programme — which offers subsidised diesel at RM2.10 per litre up to 200 litres per month — fails to account for Sarawak's unique circumstances as an oil-producing state with enormous logistical challenges.

"A one-size-fits-all approach may not reflect the realities of different regions. Sarawak's contribution as an oil-producing state and its unique logistical challenges should be considered," she said.

Lorry drivers and transport operators would be the hardest hit. One lorry driver told Voon he uses over 2,000 litres of diesel a month just transporting stones from Paku, Bau to Jalan Stephen Yong — ten times the proposed cap.

PBB Youth has hit back at DAPSY Sarawak for allegedly editing out Premier Abang Johari from social media posts about the Bintulu Port handover.

In a statement today, PBB Youth information chief Royston Valentine said DAPSY's visuals appeared to deliberately obscure the Premier's face from an official cheque handover image between the federal and state governments.

He accused DAPSY of replacing or covering the Premier's image with photos of their own leaders, giving the false impression that Sarawak's leadership played no role in the port acquisition.

Royston stressed that the Bintulu Port deal cost Sarawak RM1.8 billion — it was not a free transfer from the federal government as might be perceived. GPS leaders worked for years to secure the takeover.

"In fact, they are acting as if they were the ones who championed Sarawak's rights under MA63, whereas all this time they remained silent while GPS leaders worked tirelessly to restore Sarawak's rights," he said.

He urged all parties to avoid actions that could disrupt Sarawak's unity and harmony.

Kuching to host INTERHASH 2028 — world's biggest Hash House Harriers gathering

Sarawak has won the bid to host INTERHASH 2028, the global gathering of the Hash House Harriers community, set to take place in Kuching from July 14 to 16, 2028.

Tourism Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced that the event is expected to draw up to 4,000 participants from over 450 HH chapters worldwide, generating an estimated RM12 million in tourism receipts for the state.

The biennial gathering features four running categories:

• Ball Breaker Run — 26-28km endurance challenge
• Long Run — 7-10km
• Medium Run — 5-7km
• Short Run — 3-5km

Participants will also take part in a Red Dress Run Charity Run a day before the main event, with proceeds going to local welfare bodies.

The organising committee, led by Kuching City Hash Club, will run international promotional campaigns over the next two years through major hash events and global roadshows.

Abdul Karim called it a proud milestone for Sarawak, giving the state a chance to showcase its unique culture and adventure tourism to a global audience.
