  • Dayak Niti Daun parade draws massive crowds with 114 contingents and 5000 participants
    K kuchinghub

Over 5,000 participants in 114 contingents took over Kuching streets yesterday for the Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak 'Niti Daun' 2026 procession — a spectacular showcase of Dayak culture, heritage, and unity.

The 1.2-kilometre stretch from Tun Jugah Shopping Complex to the historic Square Tower came alive with feathers, silver ornaments, and beating gongs under the hot afternoon sun.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officially flagged off the grand march at 2.45pm, joined by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and his wife Dato Doreen Mayang.

Before the parade began, a sacred miring and Ngerandang ritual was performed — a Dayak tradition to spiritually cleanse the pathway and invoke blessings.

    The procession featured:

    • 99 walking groups and 15 intricately decorated cultural floats
    • Warriors from Kelab Gagung Sarawak leading the vanguard
    • Maidens and elders in authentic Iban, Bidayuh, and Orang Ulu traditional attire
    • Delegations from DCF, Tun Jugah Foundation, SDNU, DBNA, FORUM, and KDCA

This year's theme, "Segulai Sejalai" (Together in Unity), reflected the spirit of togetherness as thousands of onlookers lined the streets, cheering and snapping photos.

    🏆 Float Competition Winners:

    • 🥇 Champion (RM10,000): Kumpulan Kebudayaan Kampung Gumbang Bau
    • 🥈 Runner-up (RM5,000): Semban Ring Lady contingent
    • 🥉 Third (RM3,000): Gabungan Orang Asal Samarahan (GOAS)
    • Consolation (RM1,000 each): Bisaya Gong Orchestra Limbang & ASADIA HQ

Deputy Premier Uggah expressed amazement at the diversity on display, noting the emergence of rarely-seen ethnic groups such as the Remun and Tagal communities.

"Niti Daun" was historically performed during major Gawai festivals in longhouses across Baleh, Kapit, Batang Ai, and Lubok Antu. Yesterday's parade brought this ancient tradition from the longhouse ruai onto the urban streets of Kuching — a powerful symbol of cultural preservation and evolution.

    K kuchinghub

(Limbang)

  • 100-acre crocodile sanctuary planned at Kuching Wetlands, says deputy minister
    K kuchinghub

Sarawak's deputy minister has confirmed plans for a 100-acre crocodile sanctuary at Kuching Wetlands — part of a broader strategy to manage growing human-crocodile conflicts across the state.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the government has identified the site in the Kuching Wetland area, with fencing planned to keep relocated crocodiles contained within the sanctuary.

Any crocodiles removed from residential areas will be sent there.

The announcement follows a viral video showing a crocodile hunting pigeons at Kuching Waterfront last week, raising public alarm about the presence of large reptiles in popular areas.

For central Sarawak, sanctuary sites include Pulau Seduku, Batang Lupar, and Rajang Mangrove National Park. In northern Sarawak, locations in Sibuti, Lawas and Limbang have been proposed.

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) is already carrying out relocation and removal operations targeting crocodiles identified as threats to villages and longhouse communities.

Len Talif also reminded the public to stay vigilant, follow warning signs, and use the Sarawak Croc Watch app to report sightings.

  • ⛪ St Joseph's Cathedral Kuching — A Century of Faith & Architecture
    K kuchinghub

If you've ever walked along McDougall Road in Kuching, you've probably noticed this striking white building. 👀

St Joseph's Cathedral isn't some massive ornate cathedral, but there's something about it — a quiet sense of peace the moment you stand in front of it.

    📸 Source: stjosephkuching.org

Most people just snap a photo of the exterior and move on. But step inside — the stained glass windows are genuinely stunning. Imported from Tyrol, Austria, they depict St. Joseph, St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Francis Xavier.

    📸 Source: Wikipedia Commons

    🏛️ A Bit of History

The original St. Joseph's Church was completed in 1882, built with belian (ironwood) and red brick, with floor tiles imported from the Netherlands! The original design was Neo-Gothic with twin spires standing 80ft tall.

The Mill Hill Missionaries arrived in Kuching in 1881. Charles Brooke (the second White Rajah) granted them 10 acres of land. By 1882, they opened Sarawak's first Catholic school — St. Joseph's School — which started with just 20 boys in an attap hut 😅

The current building was completed in 1969 with a strikingly different "big tent" modernist design — a complete departure from the Gothic original.

    💬 What People Say

4.5⭐ on Google Maps. Some quotes:

"I come here every time I visit Kuching. It's such a peaceful place."
"It's not just a church — it's also a place to learn about Kuching's history."
"The morning light through the stained glass is beautiful."
"It looks small from outside but the interior feels spacious."

One visitor shared that they happened to attend Sunday mass — the choir's voice echoing through the cathedral was an experience they couldn't put into words.

    📍 Practical Info

    • Address: Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kuching (near Padungan)
    • Opening hours: Open daily (check website for mass times)
    • Entry: Free
    • Note: Keep quiet and respect worship activities
    • Nearby: Just a short walk to Carpenter Street and Main Bazaar

    🤔 Is It Worth Visiting?

If you're into history, architecture, or just need a quiet moment — yes. No need to make a special trip (it's right in the city centre), just drop by when you're in the area.

Some might say it's just another church. But if you know the story behind it, every brick tells a chapter of Sarawak's Catholic history.

Peter、St. Paul 和 St. Francis Xavier。

Wikipedia Commons

    Google Maps

  • RM80,000+ lost in Kuching online shopping scam — consumer group sounds alarm
    K kuchinghub

Kuching shoppers beware — online purchases from a local seller on social media have led to losses exceeding RM80,000, with at least 14 victims reporting they paid but never received their items.

The Sarawak Consumers Association (PPS) said it received 14 consumer complaints and one pharmacy complaint as of June 17, linked to a local woman suspected of selling daily necessities — including infant formula, diapers, medicines, and household items — through social media platforms.

PPS president Dr Wynson Ong said the total reported losses amounted to RM80,509.98, with more complaints still being verified.

According to PPS, some buyers initially received their orders, which built trust and encouraged repeat purchases — especially since the seller offered promotional prices lower than market rates.

"However, after several successful transactions, payments were made but the goods were no longer delivered," Ong said.

In one case involving a pharmacy, the same individual was alleged to have made an invalid payment by submitting a receipt that didn't reflect the actual payment amount.

Ong said the number of complaints shows the matter cannot be taken lightly.

"When 14 consumers and a pharmacy are involved, with losses exceeding RM80,000 and potentially reaching hundreds of thousands, this matter cannot be taken lightly."

    PPS advised shoppers to:

    • Avoid rushing into payments
    • Do not transfer money to personal bank accounts without verifying seller legitimacy
    • Check seller backgrounds
    • Use traceable payment methods

The Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) is expected to investigate.

  • Large crocodile spotted hunting at Kuching Waterfront — Minister warns kids could be next
    K kuchinghub

A large crocodile was filmed hunting and devouring a pigeon at the Kuching Waterfront, prompting a Cabinet minister to call for immediate action.

A viral video circulating on social media shows the reptile stalking and catching its prey near the popular tourist promenade, just metres from where families walk daily.

Tourism Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the footage proves the crocodile is an active predator and not a passive bystander.

"I've seen that video of the crocodile eating the pigeon. That means that crocodile is not a very tame one," he told reporters after an event at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak today (June 19).

"If there are kids swimming in that river, they might end up being eaten by the crocodile," he warned.

The minister has called on the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) to take immediate action. SFC had previously conducted capture-and-relocate operations near the floating mosque along the Sarawak River, removing several crocodiles to a sanctuary in Matang.

Abdul Karim believes this is likely a new crocodile that has moved into the area.

Crocodile sightings along the Sarawak River are not new — the reptiles have long been known to gather beneath the floating mosque. But this latest incident, captured on video, has revived public concern over safety at one of Kuching's busiest tourist spots.

You know that UFO-looking building in Kuching? 🛸

Yes, the Kuching Civic Centre (Dewan Suarah Kuching) on Jalan Taman Budaya.

I'll be honest — every time I drive past, I can't help but look up at that umbrella-shaped observation tower. As a kid, it felt straight out of a sci-fi movie.

⏳ From Landmark to "White Elephant"

The Civic Centre officially opened on 1 August 1988, right after Kuching was granted city status. Its 74-metre observation tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view — on a clear day, you can see Mount Serapi, Mount Santubong, and even the mountains of Kalimantan.

Unfortunately… the tower has been closed to the public for over a decade. 😅

There used to be a restaurant and pub at the top — weekend nights with a drink and city views was a whole vibe. Now? All shut down.

    🎯 What's Still Open?

    Things that are still running:

    • Planetarium Sultan Iskandar
    • PetroSains Playmart (great for kids)
    • The carpark was converted into a skate park — quite popular with the youngsters

The rest? Mostly closed. The Borneo Post has reported on this several times, and even the Tourist Guides Association called for the tower's restoration back in 2025.

  • Sarawak to get first glass squash court in Borneo — RM8 million project for SEA Games 2027
    K kuchinghub

Sarawak is building the first glass squash court in Borneo — an RM8 million international-standard facility in Kuching.

The project was announced by Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu. He said the glass show court will seat around 800 spectators and come with specialist lighting and broadcast facilities.

The court is part of Sarawak's preparations to host squash at the 2027 SEA Games.

Glass courts have become the norm for international squash tournaments. They offer a better view for spectators and meet requirements for TV broadcasts.

"Once this court is completed, it will open up opportunities for Sarawak to host more international-standard squash tournaments," Rentap said.

Construction is expected to start after the ongoing Asian Doubles Squash Championship wraps up. The championship is currently being held in Kuching with around 70 players from nine countries.

    📍 Location: Kuching, Sarawak
    💰 Budget: RM8 million
    🏟️ Capacity: 800 spectators

Rentap also highlighted the economic side — international teams coming here to train or compete will give a boost to hotels, food, and local services.

    K kuchinghub

Discoloured tap water has been reported across several areas in Kuching, but Sarawak Water says the Batu Kitang treatment plant is running fine — the issue is caused by sediment disturbance in the distribution network.

Sarawak Water issued a statement yesterday assuring the public that the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant continues to operate normally. The company attributed the discolouration to sediment disturbances within the distribution network, triggered by changes in water flow patterns and ongoing system stabilisation activities.

Mitigation efforts have been ongoing since June 6, including intensified flushing operations and field monitoring. Sarawak Water reports that conditions are improving and complaint trends have declined compared to the previous week.

The company apologised for the inconvenience and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring water quality to satisfactory levels.

Milton Foo had previously called for water quality reports to be released and for clean water supplies to be deployed to affected areas.

  • Main Bazaar & Carpenter Street Kuching: A Local Guide to Heritage Shopping, Antiques & Cafes
    K kuchinghub

If you only have time for one street in Kuching, make it Main Bazaar and Carpenter Street.

I'm not saying this lightly — you can easily spend an entire afternoon here, and every visit turns up something new.

📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons / Row of heritage shophouses along Main Bazaar

Let me break down what makes this area special👇

🏪 Main Bazaar — Souvenir Heaven

Running parallel to the Kuching Waterfront, Main Bazaar is a row of century-old shophouses packed with character. Every shop has its own personality — some sell authentic Sarawakian handicrafts like pua kumbu (Ikat weaving), wooden masks, and beaded accessories; others are antique dens with old coins, vintage telephones, and WWII-era ceramics. There are also pepper specialty shops selling Sarawak white and black pepper at prices cheaper than supermarkets.

One Google Maps reviewer wrote (4.5 stars): "You can find everything Sarawak here in one street. Great souvenirs at reasonable prices if you bargain."

A TripAdvisor user shared: "Spent the whole afternoon browsing. Ended up buying two pieces of pua kumbu fabric and a parang. The shop owner patiently explained the meaning behind each pattern."

Pro tip: Polite bargaining is expected, especially if you're buying multiple items.

    🔨 Carpenter Street — Cafes & Old-School Charm

Turn the corner from Main Bazaar and you'll find Carpenter Street (locally known as Jalan Tukang Besi or simply "Carpenter"). The vibe shifts here — less touristy, more local.

    Must-visit spots:

    • Old Charming Café — A converted heritage shophouse with vintage Nanyang decor. Their white coffee and kaya toast are legendary.
    • Black Bean Cafe — Run by young local owners, solid coffee and a chill spot to rest your feet.

Beyond cafes, this street still has traditional Chinese medicine halls, old-school barbershops, and goldsmiths that have been operating for decades. A local resident put it this way: "Carpenter Street is where old Kuching still breathes. Some shops have been here for three generations."

    🛍️ Shopping Tips

    • Most shops open 9am-5/6pm, though some cafes stay open later
    • Some shops close on Sundays
    • Best buys: Sarawak pepper, pua kumbu textiles, wood carvings, handmade beadwork, local snacks like kek lapis
    • Many shops accept Touch 'n Go / credit cards

    📍 Getting There

Main Bazaar / Carpenter Street is right next to the Kuching Waterfront, easily walkable from most city center hotels (Hilton, Grand Margherita, Merdeka Palace — all within 5-10 minutes walk). If driving, there's open-air parking nearby but it gets tight on weekends.

    🌟 My Take

If you've only got half a day in Kuching city, this stretch is worth every minute. It's not a tourist trap — it's the real deal, with genuine local character. Grab some souvenirs, sip a white coffee, snap photos of the heritage architecture. This IS Kuching's名片 (名片 means business card / identity).

    K kuchinghub

    🏪 Main Bazaar —

You can find everything Sarawak here in one street. Great souvenirs at reasonable prices if you bargain."(4.5星)

    🔨 Carpenter Street —

    • Old Charming Café —
    • Black Bean Cafe —

Carpenter Street is where old Kuching still breathes. Some shops have been here for three generations."
