I've been living in Kuching for years, and I only made it to Sarawak Cultural Village last month

Honestly, I always thought this was just another tourist trap — a fake village for photo ops. But after visiting… I take it back.

This place is massive — 17 acres right across from Damai Beach. A proper walkthrough takes 3-4 hours if you actually stop and explore.

The Village replicates 7 main ethnic groups' traditional houses: Iban Longhouse, Bidayuh Round House, Orang Ulu longhouse, Melanau Tall House, Chinese farmhouse, Malay Kampung house, and Penan hut. Each house has representatives doing actual handicrafts — not just posing for photos.

The Cultural Show at noon is the highlight — traditional dances from each tribe: Iban's ngajat, Orang Ulu's sape music, Malay dance, Chinese dance… You can tell the performers genuinely enjoy it, not just going through the motions.

坦白讲，在 Kuching 住了这么多年，我竟然上个月才第一次去 Sarawak Cultural Village

老实说，之前一直觉得这就是个 tourist trap，给游客看的样板村而已。但去了之后… 我收回这句话。

这地方有多大？17 acres，就在 Damai Beach 对面，走一圈下来差不多要 3-4 个小时，前提是你真的有在认真看。

整个 Village 复制了 Sarawak 7 个主要族群的传统房屋：Iban Longhouse、Bidayuh Round House、Orang Ulu 长屋、Melanau Tall House、中国式农舍、马来 Kampung 屋，还有 Penan 的树皮棚。每个屋子都有族裔代表在里面做手工艺，是真的在做，不是摆拍。

最值得看的是中午那场 Cultural Show — 各族传统舞蹈轮番上场，Iban 的 ngajat、Orang Ulu 的 sape 演奏、马来舞、华人舞… 表演者看得出是真的享受，不是应付式的那种 tourist performance。

古晋 Padungan 的白猫雕像在 5 月 26 日举行了年度亮灯仪式，今年特地穿上了印有 songket 花纹的红绿背心，庆祝达雅节 Gawai Dayak，同时也传达砂拉越多元族群和谐共处的信息。

副首席部长拿督阿玛沈桂贤医生主持亮灯时表示，这项活动已成为古晋的传统，展现了砂拉越包容的精神。他也以达雅语祝福大家："Selamat Hari Gawai, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai。"

沈桂贤也提醒回乡庆祝 Gawai 的民众小心驾驶："路况虽然改善了，但还是要小心。喝酒别开车，开车别喝酒。"

古晋南市市长拿督黄鸿圣透露，这次特意选用 songket 印花布料而非 Pua Kumbu（达雅传统布料），是出于对达雅文化的尊重。"在给雕像穿衣服时，我们必须咨询和尊重其他族群的文化，免得引起误解。"

The White Cat statue in Padungan is now wearing a printed songket-inspired red and green vest — a vibrant symbol of Gawai Dayak and Sarawak's cultural harmony.

The special attire was unveiled during a lighting ceremony at the iconic statue on May 26, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. He said the annual lighting tradition reflects Sarawak's inclusive spirit and the harmony among its people.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Selamat Hari Gawai, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai," Dr Sim said.

As people are travelling back for Gawai, Dr Sim reminded motorists to drive carefully. "Road conditions are improving, but please drive safely. If you drink, don't drive. If you drive, don't drink."

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng explained that a printed songket-inspired material was chosen instead of Pua Kumbu textile out of respect for Dayak cultural sensitivities. "When dressing the statue, it is important for us to consult and respect the cultures of others," he said.

The mayor also drew a parallel between the open-door tradition of longhouse culture and Sarawak's unity: "If you have been to a longhouse, all the pintu are 'buka' (open). This openness is the heartbeat of our Sarawak unity."

Sarawakian singer and influencer Miss Alvy took to Threads today to call out what she describes as "unreasonable" flight prices ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebration.

She highlighted that a return ticket from Peninsular Malaysia to Borneo can cost up to RM1,000 — enough, she said, to travel overseas. Many netizens from Sabah and Sarawak chimed in, sharing their own horror stories of festive season airfares, with some saying return tickets can hit RM1,900.

According to Miss Alvy, many East Malaysians have been forced to delay returning home for years because of the high ticket prices. Some families can only reunite during major holidays, while others simply cannot afford it at all.

The post has reignited the long-standing debate about the high cost of air connectivity between Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia, especially during festive seasons like Gawai and Hari Raya.

If you only have one day in Kuching and want to get up close with nature, Bako National Park should be at the very top of your list. Established in 1957, it is Sarawak's oldest national park — and arguably one of the most accessible wild experiences in all of Borneo.

🦧 Semenggoh Wildlife Centre — Kuching's Iconic Orangutan Sanctuary

Just a 30-minute drive from Kuching city centre (take the road towards Serian/Puncak Borneo), Semenggoh Wildlife Centre has been Sarawak's most famous semi-wild orangutan rehabilitation centre since 1975. It's a must-visit for anyone coming to Kuching.

What is it?

Semenggoh isn't a zoo — it's a rehabilitation centre. Orangutans here are semi-wild, free to roam the forest. They only come back during feeding times when food is provided. The centre rescues injured orangutans or those kept illegally as pets and trains them to survive in the wild again.

Feeding Times (best time to see them):

• Morning: 9:00 - 10:00 AM
• Afternoon: 3:00 - 4:00 PM

Pro tip: arrive before feeding time starts, otherwise the orangutans might already be deep in the forest.

🦧 Semenggoh Wildlife Centre — 古晋近郊看人猿好去处

从古晋市区开车大概 30 分钟，往西走 Pokok 路就到了 Semenggoh 自然保护区。这里就是砂拉越最有名的半野生人猿康复中心，也是很多游客来古晋必去的景点之一。

这里是做什么的？

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre 成立于 1975 年，主要是照顾受伤或被人非法饲养的人猿，训练他们重新在野外生存。跟动物园不一样——这里的人猿是 semi-wild 的，他们可以自由进出森林，只是每天有两个 feeding time 会回来吃东西。

Feeding Time（看人猿最佳时间）：

• 早上 9:00 - 10:00
• 下午 3:00 - 4:00

最好 feeding time 前去，不然人猿可能在森林深处看不到。

鲁勃安都边境今日凌晨破获一宗人口走私案，警方逮捕13人，包括2名孩童及一名本地男子。

武吉安曼普通行动部队（PGA）第10营情报组于凌晨3点30分左右，在鲁勃安都 Ensawang 一条非法通道展开突击行动。被捕者包括12名外籍人士（其中2人是孩童），以及一名27岁的本地男子，怀疑充当「陆路蛇头」（tekong darat）。

警方追踪两辆运载外籍人士的车辆。其中一辆四驱车由本地男子驾驶，另一辆轿车则由一名外籍司机驾驶，车上载有其他没有合法旅行证件的偷渡者。

执法人员当场扣押两辆车、一台舷外船用引擎，以及两台用于走私勾当的手机。

案件目前在《2007年反贩卖人口及反走私移民法令》（ATIPSOM）及《1959/63年移民法令》下展开调查。

砂拉越边境偷渡问题持续存在，走私集团不断利用非法通道避过检查站。

13 people including two children and a local man have been detained at the Lubok Antu-Badau border area after police busted a migrant smuggling operation early Monday morning.

The General Operations Force (PGA) Battalion 10 Sibu Intelligence Unit conducted the raid around 3:30am along an ungazetted route in Ensawang, Lubok Antu. Among those held were 12 foreign nationals — including two children — and a 27-year-old local man believed to be acting as a 'land skipper' (tekong darat).

Police tracked two vehicles used to transport the foreign nationals. The local man was driving a four-wheel-drive, while a second sedan was driven by a foreign national carrying others without valid travel documents.

Authorities seized two vehicles, an outboard boat engine, and two mobile phones linked to the smuggling operation.

The case is being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.

This latest operation highlights ongoing issues along Sarawak's border routes, where smugglers continue to use ungazetted pathways to bypass checkpoints.

Most people recommend the Treehouses — built right into the trees along the beach. Waking up to monkey calls and falling asleep to waves. A friend told me "worth the upgrade, the view is unreal." Activities
Plenty to do here. Kayak and SUP — go in the late afternoon unless you want to get cooked by the morning sun. High Ropes Course gets good reviews from FB folks who've tried it. Jungle trekking to a waterfall and Blue Pool if you're up for a hike.

Other stuff: dolphin watching (Irrawaddy dolphins — boat cruise), firefly tours at the mangrove at night, even crocodile watching. Feeling ambitious? Climb Mount Santubong — the resort's site says it's harder than Southeast Asia's tallest mountain, and that's not a joke.

Food
The on-site restaurant is called The Feeding Tree — cute name. Dinner gets decent reviews but breakfast is just okay. BBQ facilities available if you feel like grilling.

The real talk (not just ratings):

One Google Maps reviewer said "Rustic resort with a hillside cafe" — that's spot on. It's not a luxury resort, it's rustic nature style.
TripAdvisor: "Cold but refreshing jungle pool" — accurate, that pool is genuinely cold.
On Xiaohongshu someone mentioned "2-3 days max, any longer gets boring" — evening activities are limited.
FB Kuching travel group: a local commented "Been here 3 times, brought different friends each time, they all loved it."
Also noted: "Tough without a car, shuttle is pricey (RM180/way from airport)."

️ Permai Rainforest Resort — 古晋人的周末放空好去处

从古晋市区开车大概 35-40 分钟，Santubong 山脚下一转进去就到了。隔壁就是 Sarawak Cultural Village 和 Damai Central，一路还能看到山都望山。

住什么？
有几种选择。树屋（Treehouse）是最多人推荐的 — 建在海边的树丛里，早上被猴子声叫醒、晚上听着海浪声睡。有朋友跟我说"树屋值得贴钱 upgrade，那个风景 unreal"。也有 Villa（2房/3房，有客厅有冰箱），适合 family 或一群朋友。喜欢露营的也可以自己带帐篷来，resort 有厕所和冲凉房。

有什么玩？
这里的活动算多的。Kayak 和 Stand Up Paddle Board — 建议傍晚去划，早上太阳真的不是开玩笑的。高空绳索课程（High Ropes Course）有 FB 网友分享说很刺激。也可以去雨林徒步，走到瀑布和 Blue Pool，但需要一点体力。

还有海豚观赏（Irrawaddy dolphins 的 boat cruise）、萤火虫夜游（晚上 mangrove 那边超多）、甚至鳄鱼观赏。想挑战的话可以爬 Santubong 山 — 官方说比东南亚最高的山还难爬，不是开玩笑的。

吃的方面
餐厅叫 The Feeding Tree，名字很可爱。晚餐评价不错，但早餐就普普通通。也有 BBQ 设施可以自己烧。

真实体验是怎样的？
我整合了几个地方看到的评价，不是只看评分数字：

一个 Google Maps 用户写 "Rustic resort with a hillside cafe" — 这形容很准，它不是那种豪华 resort，走的是 rustic 自然风。
有个 TripAdvisor 网友说 "Cold but refreshing jungle pool" — 那个 jungle pool 是真的冷，但热天跳进去很爽。
小红书上有人分享说不适合住太久，"两三天刚刚好，再久会闷"，晚上活动确实比较少。
FB 古晋旅游群组有本地人留言说 "来了第三次了，每次都带不同朋友来，他们都很喜欢。"
也有人提到 "没车真的不方便，shuttle 又贵（机场 RM180/趟）"。

古晋城市FC（Kuching City FC）上周六晚在大马杯决赛以0-2不敌柔佛JDT，但整季表现已被视为球会史上最亮眼的一页。

在主帅 Aidil Sharin Sahak 带领下，Cats 一路过关斩将，首次杀入大马杯决赛：

• 16强： 首回合客场0-1输槟城，次回合主场2-0翻盘
• 8强： 对汶莱 DPMM FC，两回合6-2大胜
• 半决赛： 对雪兰莪，首回合1-1客场逼平，次回合主场1-0取胜，总比分2-1晋级

7场比赛取得4胜1和2负，攻入10球仅失6球。主场3战全胜，只丢1球。

不仅如此，他们在超级联赛的表现也锁定 马超第二 位置，成功获得 下赛季亚冠联赛二（AFC Champions League Two）参赛资格 —— 同样是球会历史首次！

决赛当晚超过5万名球迷涌入武吉加里尔国家体育馆，砂拉越总理拿督巴丁宜丹斯里阿邦佐哈里及多名州联邦部长也到场支持。

Kuching City FC may have fallen 2-0 to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the Malaysia Cup final last Saturday night — but their run to Bukit Jalil is being celebrated as the club's greatest achievement to date.

Under head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak, the Cats stunned Malaysian football by reaching the final for the first time ever. Their campaign was built on grit:

• Round of 16: Beat Penang FC 2-1 on aggregate after losing the first leg away

• Quarter-finals: Dominated DPMM FC 6-2 on aggregate

• Semi-finals: Edged Selangor FC 2-1, winning the home leg 1-0

They played 7 matches, won 4, drew 1, lost 2 — scoring 10 goals and conceding just 6. They won all three home matches at the State Stadium.

Beyond the Malaysia Cup, their Super League performance also secured qualification for next season's AFC Champions League Two as Malaysia's No.2 — another historic first for the club.

More than 50,000 supporters packed the National Stadium, including Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and several state and federal ministers.

JDT's goals came from Marcos Guilherme (80') and Arif Aiman Hanapi (90'). Kuching City had a golden chance from the penalty spot in the 60th minute but couldn't convert.

Four students from St Joseph’s International School (SJIS) in Kuching have earned Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards — including three “Top in the World” titles — in the November 2025 examination series.

This is reportedly the first time SJIS has achieved three worldwide top honours in a single exam sitting.

Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi is calling for the revival of weekly farmers markets in Kuching to give residents better access to fresh, affordable produce.

The Pantai Damai assemblyman made the proposal at the Jualan Agro Sarawakku Sayang (JASS) programme held at Esplanade Gersik on Sunday (May 24).

According to him, Esplanade Gersik was once home to a weekly farmers market organised by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) around seven to eight years ago. He hopes FAMA, together with the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development, along with DBKU (Kuching North City Commission), can bring it back.

"Reviving such programmes would help residents obtain fresh food products at reasonable prices," he said.

• Discussions will be held with FAMA to explore regular monthly or quarterly programmes
• Also proposing the JASS programme be reintroduced on a regular basis in Kuching
• Dr Abdul Rahman urged residents to take up urban farming initiatives organised by DBKU to reduce household food expenses
