A massive fire tore through a 21-door longhouse in Bekenu in the early hours of this morning, leaving 136 residents without a home.
The Fire and Rescue Department received the distress call at 1:17am. Firefighters from Batu Niah and Miri Central stations rushed to Rumah Nelson Ningkan, Jalan Sungai Saeh, Kampung Labau Bekenu to battle the blaze.
The longhouse — a non-permanent wooden structure with individual homes measuring 16×100 square feet — was completely destroyed.
It took crews seven hours to contain the fire. Firefighters used four water streams to tackle flames from the front, back, and sides of the building. The operation wrapped up at 8:18am.
No injuries or deaths were reported, but all 136 residents have been displaced.
