  • 🧚 Fairy Cave Bau — A 45-Min Drive from Kuching, This Jurassic Cave Costs Just RM1
    K kuchinghub

Fairy Cave is the sort of place I would put on a Bau half-day, not squeeze between two city cafés. The approach is simple; the cave is not. A four-storey staircase lifts you into a Jurassic limestone chamber where daylight falls through openings onto moss, ribs of rock and damp formations.

    📸 Source: Malaysia-Traveller

The story begins before the photo: Fairy Cave, also called Gua Pari, belongs to the very old limestone landscape around Bau, a former gold-mining settlement. Its age explains why the cave feels less like a decorated attraction and more like a cut-open piece of geology. The name comes from the fairy-tale light and shapes, but the details worth noticing are real—stalactites, stalagmites, hanging roots and green growth where the cave meets the forest.

    📸 Source: Malaysia-Traveller

I would arrive early enough to leave room for both Fairy Cave and nearby Wind Cave. The main chamber is friendly to a curious first-time visitor, but the darker trails, wet surfaces and staircase are a different proposition. Bring shoes with grip and a torch; installed lighting does not make every shadowed section comfortable. Anyone expecting an easy, fully polished indoor walk may feel short-changed, while people who enjoy limestone, bats and a little uncertainty will probably want longer.

    📸 Source: CPH Travel

The practical trade-off is time. From central Kuching, allow roughly 45–60 minutes by car depending on traffic, then reserve about 60–90 minutes for the cave and entrance area. A car or pre-arranged ride is easier than relying on a return e-hailing car from Bau. Entry fees and the last admission time have changed in visitor accounts, so check the current operator notice before leaving; do not plan a late arrival around an old RM1 claim. Rain can make steps and trails slick, and a closure, maintenance job or guided-trail restriction can change the route.

    📸 Source: DayakDaily

If I were choosing between a quick viewpoint and a proper cave outing, I would choose the latter and pair it with Wind Cave or Bau town. Fairy Cave earns the detour because its history is written into the rock and the climb, not because the entrance fee is cheap. Families with steady walkers and international visitors who want a distinct Sarawak landscape should enjoy it; toddlers, mobility-limited travellers and anyone who dislikes darkness should choose a gentler stop.

    📸 Source: CPH Travel

Keep the visit unhurried, protect the formations, and leave the cave with enough daylight for the road back. That is when the “fairy” atmosphere works best—part natural theatre, part reminder that Bau’s landscape is much older than Kuching’s sightseeing circuit.

    K kuchinghub

Malaysia-Traveller

Malaysia-Traveller

CPH Travel

CPH Travel

    K kuchinghub

  • Miri & Kuching Record Malaysia Steepest Cement Price Hikes
    K kuchinghub

Miri and Kuching now lead the nation in cement price increases, with annual hikes of 7.5% and 7.4% respectively — the highest in Malaysia, according to the latest DOSM data.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) released its Special Release for Building and Structural Works for May 2026, showing average cement prices across Malaysia rose from RM23.04 per 50kg bag in May 2024 to RM25.95 in May 2026.

But Sarawaks two largest cities saw the biggest jumps.

Miri recorded the highest year-on-year increase at 7.5%, with Kuching close behind at 7.4%. Nationwide, the year-on-year range was just 1.0% to 7.5%.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin noted that cement prices also rose month-on-month across all regions, increasing between 0.2% and 2.1% in May alone.

Other construction materials are not spared either:

    • Steel prices rose 0.1% to 1.3% month-on-month nationwide, with Sibu and Miri among the higher increases
    • Sand prices increased up to 9.7% in some areas, with Sibu recording a 3.7% jump
    • Aggregate prices climbed 0.3% to 4.7% nationwide

The Building Cost Index (BCI) confirmed the broader trend, with Sarawak recording month-on-month increases of 0.1% to 1.1% across all building categories.

At the national level, Ordinary Portland cement now averages RM25.95 per 50kg bag, while steel bars sit at RM3,517.50 per metric tonne.

For homeowners planning renovations and developers with ongoing projects, these numbers mean real cost pressure ahead.

  • Kuching Waterfront: The Heartbeat of Kuching City 🌆
    K kuchinghub

For a first evening in Kuching, I would start where the city’s river story is still visible under your feet: the Kuching Waterfront. This is less a single attraction than a south-bank thread connecting old shopfronts, boats, food, civic buildings and the walk across to Darul Hana.

The riverfront was once Kuching’s working edge, where the nineteenth-century trading port met the Sarawak River. The modern promenade emerged from the 1993 redevelopment of that old edge, which is why the walk feels layered rather than designed as one giant photo set: five-foot ways and historic buildings sit beside lighting, fountains and newer public space.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

I would begin near Main Bazaar or the Old Court House while there is still daylight. Across the water, The Astana, Fort Margherita and the State Legislative Assembly building turn the opposite bank into a history lesson; the river also explains why Kuching grew here in the first place. When the light softens, the same route becomes a local evening space for strolling, festivals, street performances and families—not just an international visitor’s viewpoint.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

The most useful choice is whether to keep walking or take the river. A penambang can save time and give you the water-level view, while Darul Hana Bridge lets you cross on foot and look back at the old city. Boat fares, cruise departures and return arrangements are operator-dependent, so ask before boarding; the promenade itself is free, but an evening plan should not assume every stall or boat runs late.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

Allow 60–90 minutes for a relaxed walk, or two to three hours if you add the bridge, food and a boat. Midday can be hard in the humidity, while late afternoon gives you old façades, river traffic and sunset before the lights come on. Parking around the old town tightens during events, so walking from a central hotel or using e-hailing is usually easier; carry rain protection because river weather changes quickly.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

    📸 Source: Wikimedia Commons

The Waterfront is worth prioritising for a first-time international visitor because it gives context to several other stops at once. Anyone expecting a quiet, empty boardwalk may be disappointed at festival time, but a traveller willing to follow the river’s working history into the evening will find the route keeps changing as the light does.

    K kuchinghub

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons

Former soldier Umar Sidee, 66, dashed into a blazing two-storey house in Sibu to rescue eight grandchildren and his son — a split-second decision that saved nine lives.

The fire tore through Kampung Jeriah Abang Ramli along Jalan Oya Lama around 11am on Sunday (June 7). Umar and his wife were at a nearby orchard when they heard explosions from the house.

"My wife suddenly shouted that our house was on fire. I heard several explosions," Umar told Bernama.

He ran inside, grabbed all his grandchildren aged 4 to 14 who were watching TV on the ground floor, then rushed upstairs to wake his son.

"I was in the armed forces before. I couldn't just watch my family die," he said.

Villagers tried to help put out the fire with buckets, but the flames spread too fast. Bomba firefighters arrived and ordered everyone back as conditions became dangerous.

The family of 19 from three households survived. But the house — built by Umar over nearly 40 years after he retired from military service in 1995 — was completely destroyed.

  • 🏛️ Borneo Cultures Museum — Is Malaysia's Largest Museum Worth Visiting?
    K kuchinghub

When a museum day has to carry the weight of a whole region, I would start at Borneo Cultures Museum beside Padang Merdeka. It is not merely the biggest-looking building in town: its five floors move from rivers and childhood to ecology, changing time and the objects people desire.

    📸 Source: Wikimedia / Wikipedia

The building opened in March 2022 as Sarawak’s flagship cultural institution, taking over the central-city museum role while the historic State Museum undergoes its own long transition. That change is visible in the galleries: “Love Our Rivers” gives children an entry point, “In Harmony with Nature” links daily life to the environment, “Time Changes” makes history a process rather than a date list, and “Objects of Desire” lets material culture do the talking.

    📸 Source: Prestige Singapore

The independent visitor response is strongest when the displays are treated as a route, not a photo backdrop. Interactive media and more than a thousand objects help first-time visitors, but the scale can also tire anyone who tries to read every label. I would allow two hours, more for a serious visit, and start upstairs or follow the gallery sequence before the building fills. Travellers wanting a small quiet museum may find it too large; families, rainy-day planners and visitors with only one cultural afternoon get much more from it.

    📸 Source: KuchingBorneo

From the Waterfront or Main Bazaar, walk across the old-city streets to Padang Merdeka; parking and e-hailing are easier than treating this as a drive-by stop. Current published hours are 9:00–4:45 on weekdays and 9:30–4:30 on weekends and public holidays, with last admission at 4:00, but holidays, exhibitions and ticket rules can move. Check the museum’s current notice before committing to the final hour. The auditorium and event spaces also mean a public programme can change the feel of a visit without making the museum closed.

    📸 Source: The Island Drum

I would pair it with the State Museum grounds, Old Court House or a slow walk across Padang Merdeka, then stop before cultural fatigue sets in. The museum is worth prioritising for international visitors who want context quickly, but its real strength is the connection between landscape, community and objects—not the claim that it is simply “the largest.”

    📸 Source: Just Gone Wandering

Give the galleries enough time to change your route through Sarawak, and the five-storey building becomes a useful beginning rather than a checklist ending.

    K kuchinghub

Wikimedia / Wikipedia

  • SMK Dalat
    K kuchinghub

  • SMK Dalat Girls' Hostel Declared Unsafe — Students Still Living in Termite-Infested Building
    K kuchinghub

Termite-damaged and declared unsafe by JKR — yet SMK Dalat's girls' hostel continues to house students, prompting an urgent call from Minister Fatimah Abdullah.

DALAT: The girls' hostel at SMK Dalat has been declared unsafe by the Public Works Department (JKR), but students are still living there due to a lack of alternative accommodation.

Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, raised the issue during a visit to the school on Monday.

"The first thing is safety. What we are concerned about is the safety of our students," she said.

The nearly 48-year-old school comprises several ageing wooden structures, with termite infestation weakening parts of the buildings. The girls' hostel — located next to one of the old school blocks — remains occupied despite JKR's safety assessment.

Fatimah noted that while the hostel is clean and well maintained by its occupants, visible signs of deterioration, including termite-damaged window frames, underscore the need for immediate action.

The hostel was reportedly not included in the approved scope of renovation works for the school.
