Serian has entered the unhealthy API range, and Sarawak may see more haze over the next few days. [image: 1785146672063-haze_map_20260727.jpg] NREB Sarawak said the Southwest Monsoon is now carrying a higher risk of transboundary haze, especially if biomass burning outside Sarawak intensifies. The board said ASMC recorded 1,081 hotspots in Kalimantan from July 1 to 26. Of these, 442 were detected in the last five days. Sarawak recorded 16 hotspots during the same period. As of noon on July 27, Serian recorded an API reading of 151, which falls under the unhealthy category. Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Samalaju, Lundu, Tebedu and Lubok Antu were in the moderate range. NREB said it has activated its haze operations room, increased patrols, revoked earlier controlled-burning permits and suspended new controlled-burning permits for now. Location: Sarawak, including Serian and Kuching Details: NREB advised the public to drink enough water, reduce outdoor activity during hot and dry spells, and use N95 masks outdoors, especially for high-risk groups. Open burning can lead to a fine of up to RM100,000, jail up to five years, or both. Photo credit: DayakDaily / NREB Sarawak Source: DayakDaily What do you think?

[image: 1784001908911-serian-road.jpg] A RM32.87 million rural road project in Serian is expected to make travel between Kampung Mayang Kawan and Kampung Mentung Mubuk much faster. The new road will link the two villages in the Kedup constituency and benefit 3,653 residents from seven villages. Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the project is being carried out under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), with construction handled by JKR Serian Division. Once completed, the route between Kampung Mayang Kawan and Kampung Mentung Mubuk is expected to drop from 28.4km to 8.7km. Travel time should also fall from around 35 minutes to about 10 minutes. The road is also expected to improve access to three primary schools, agricultural areas and basic services, while reducing transport costs for rural communities.

Ranchan Pools is a cooling stop, not a polished resort—and that is exactly why I would put it on a relaxed Serian day. Expect moving water, large rocks, picnic groups and basic facilities; do not arrive expecting a curated theme park. [image: 1783995033016-ranchan-stream.jpg] Source: 360Tour Asia [image: 1783995033193-ranchan-waterfall.jpg] Source: 360Tour Asia [image: 1783995033362-ranchan-boulders.jpg] Source: 360Tour Asia [image: 1783995033525-ranchan-pool.jpg] Source: 360Tour Asia Who it suits I would recommend Ranchan to families, groups bringing their own food, and travellers who want a short nature break after driving out from Kuching. It is less suitable for anyone who needs smooth paths, guaranteed dry footing or a quiet photo-only stop. The rocks can be slippery, especially after rain, so children need close supervision and swimming should depend on the water and weather that day. The visitor consensus is fairly consistent: the stream, small cascades and pools are the attraction, while cleanliness, maintenance and crowding can vary. That mix makes the honest verdict simple: good value for a low-key local picnic if you accept basic conditions; not worth a long detour if you want resort comfort. How I would plan the route Drive from Kuching towards Serian, stop in Serian town for supplies, then continue to Ranchan. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes each way from central Kuching depending on traffic, and about 2–3 hours on site. I would go earlier on a weekend, bring drinking water, a towel, spare clothes, rubbish bags and shoes with grip. Keep a backup indoor plan during heavy rain: water levels and rocks can change quickly. Parking and picnic areas are available around the recreation site, but the exact condition of facilities and any local charge can change. I could confirm the place is still listed and actively visited on the current map listing checked 2026-08-24; I could not verify a fixed daily fee or a guaranteed operating timetable, so check the listing or local signage before setting out. Search for closure, repair or flood warnings again on the day. Practical verdict Come for the cool stream and an unhurried picnic, not for a checklist of facilities. If the weather is unstable or the water looks unsafe, skip the pools rather than forcing the plan.
