If you're looking for a day trip that feels completely different from the usual Kuching spots, Gunung Gading National Park is it.

It's about 75km from town, near Lundu — about an hour and a half drive. And yeah, the distance is worth it.

Why people go

Two things: the Rafflesia flower and the waterfalls.

Gunung Gading is one of the few places in Borneo where you can see Rafflesia tuan-mudae — the world's largest flower — in the wild. The problem? It blooms unpredictably. Like, only a few days a year. But here's the good part: the park rangers actually keep track and will let the tourist offices know when one is about to bloom. So if you call ahead to Sarawak Forestry, you can time your visit. One visitor on Google Maps said: "I went three times before I finally saw it. When it opened, it was huge — easily 60cm across. Smelled like rotten meat though lol."

The waterfall trail

Even if the Rafflesia isn't blooming, the waterfall trail is no joke. There are 7 cascades along the trail — you can hike to the 7th waterfall (the biggest one) and it takes about 45 minutes each way. Bring proper shoes, the trail can get slippery."

The summit trail

If you're more adventurous, the summit trail is a 6-hour return climb up Gunung Gading itself. It's steep in parts and not for beginners, but the view from the top on a clear day is stunning. According to a review on TripAdvisor: "The summit trail is tough but rewarding. You go through different types of forest — lowland dipterocarp, then montane. Saw a few pitcher plants along the way."

The park's visitor centre is built like a traditional Bidayuh baruk (head-house). It's actually quite beautiful and has exhibits about Rafflesia and the local ecosystem. 古晋23名男子昨日被控上庭，涉嫌参与名为「Geng 24 Hung-Hung」的有组织犯罪集团。

23 men were charged in a Kuching court yesterday over their alleged involvement in an organised criminal syndicate called 'Geng 24 Hung-Hung'.

All 23 are accused of taking part in organised criminal activities between December 2021 and April 2026 at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Temaga Cina-Dayak, Sematan.

They were charged under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code — which carries a prison sentence of between 5 and 20 years upon conviction.

The case is being prosecuted by the Attorney General's Chambers. Counsel representing the accused include Dato Shankar Ram, Ranbir Singh, Ralph Lee, Patrick Voon, Daniel Ling, and Tiong Ing Neng.

No bail was offered since the charges fall under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA). All 23 have been ordered to remain in remand pending the next mention date on July 23, 2026.

According to the prosecution, the arrests were made during police's Ops Pusak Merah conducted between April 19 and 23.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made this remark at the State-level Gawai Dayak 2026 Gala Dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Sunday night, after Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas presented him with a RM1.8 billion cheque from the Sarawak government.

The cheque relates to the Bintulu Port regulatory handover — a major MA63 milestone that officially transferred control to Sarawak.

Anwar said the gesture proves that when a state is managed well, with competent leadership and sound fiscal governance, it can deliver. He specifically saluted Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his team.

Charles Brooke even planted betel nut trees behind the palace so he could offer fresh ones to visiting Dayak chiefs. 老实说，我第一次去的时候还以为是哪个富豪的别墅 后来才知道背后的故事挺有意思的——

这栋建筑是 1870 年，第二代白拉者 Charles Brooke 为他英国妻子 Margaret 建的结婚礼物。从英国娶回来的 Ranee 把英式生活带到了婆罗洲，据说她后来还写了一本《My Life in Sarawak》，记录当年在 Astana 的生活点滴。

Sarawak's deputy minister has confirmed plans for a 100-acre crocodile sanctuary at Kuching Wetlands — part of a broader strategy to manage growing human-crocodile conflicts across the state.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the government has identified the site in the Kuching Wetland area, with fencing planned to keep relocated crocodiles contained within the sanctuary.

Any crocodiles removed from residential areas will be sent there.

The announcement follows a viral video showing a crocodile hunting pigeons at Kuching Waterfront last week, raising public alarm about the presence of large reptiles in popular areas.

For central Sarawak, sanctuary sites include Pulau Seduku, Batang Lupar, and Rajang Mangrove National Park. In northern Sarawak, locations in Sibuti, Lawas and Limbang have been proposed.

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) is already carrying out relocation and removal operations targeting crocodiles identified as threats to villages and longhouse communities.

Len Talif also reminded the public to stay vigilant, follow warning signs, and use the Sarawak Croc Watch app to report sightings.

Most people just snap a photo of the exterior and move on. But step inside — the stained glass windows are genuinely stunning. Imported from Tyrol, Austria, they depict St. Joseph, St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Francis Xavier.

️ A Bit of History

The original St. Joseph's Church was completed in 1882, built with belian (ironwood) and red brick, with floor tiles imported from the Netherlands! The original design was Neo-Gothic with twin spires standing 80ft tall.

The Mill Hill Missionaries arrived in Kuching in 1881. Charles Brooke (the second White Rajah) granted them 10 acres of land. By 1882, they opened Sarawak's first Catholic school — St. Joseph's School — which started with just 20 boys in an attap hut

The current building was completed in 1969 with a strikingly different "big tent" modernist design — a complete departure from the Gothic original.

️ 一点历史

️ 古晋人注意！近期有一名本地女子通过社交媒体兜售日常用品，包括奶粉、尿片、药物和家居用品，目前已有14人投诉付了钱却没收到货，损失总额超过 RM80,000！

砂拉越消费者协会（PPS）主席 Dr Wynson Ong 透露，截至6月17日，他们已接获14宗消费者投诉，以及一宗药房的投诉，怀疑为同一人所为。

Ong 表示，这名卖家最初确实有发货给部分买家，建立信任后吸引更多人下单，尤其是她开出的价格比市价更便宜。

"但几次成功交易后，买家付款却再也没有收到货物。"

其中一宗药房案件更夸张——对方提交了一张不反映实际付款金额的收据，疑似伪造付款凭证。

"14名消费者加一间药房，损失超过8万令吉，甚至可能达到数十万令吉，这件事绝不能轻视。" Ong 强调。

消费者协会提醒大家：

• 不要急着付款
• 不要转账到个人银行户口，除非确认卖家信誉
• 查清楚卖家背景
• 使用可追踪的付款方式

警方商业罪案调查组已介入调查。
