Padawan Municipal Council ratepayers have until Saturday, October 31 to pay their second half-year and annual 2026 assessment bills. Late payment attracts a surcharge of 1 per cent a month.
MPP’s reminder dated October 19 says its payment counter will open from 8am to 4pm on the deadline Saturday. Normal Monday-to-Friday counter hours are 8am to 3.30pm, with service continuing through the lunch break.
A missing bill does not require waiting for another postal delivery. Owners who have not received a bill, or have lost it, can obtain a copy at MPP’s ground-floor counter or call 082-615566 to arrange an email bill.
The council lists PayBills, the Service Sarawak portal and SPay Global as online payment options. Its notice also lists payment counters at MPP, MBKS, DBKU, SESCO, Kuching Water Board, Pos Malaysia, H&L supermarkets in Kuching and the Service Sarawak Centre at UTC. The extended October 31 hours are stated for MPP’s counter, not for every collection outlet. The reminder concerns properties assessed by MPP; it does not put those properties under another council’s jurisdiction merely because payment can be made there.

Sarawak is taking over the upgrading projects at SMK Gedong and SK Sageng, Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg said on October 18.
Speaking at the Satu Pemimpin, Satu Kampung programme in Gedong, he said the state would step in so pupils could continue to receive quality education and access to up-to-date knowledge, regardless of the funding source.
The two projects sit within a wider school-upgrading commitment. In the Sarawak Budget 2027 tabled on October 12, an additional RM29 million was announced for urgent redevelopment or upgrading at SMK Gedong, SK Sageng, SJKC Tong Ah and SK Tupong. That figure covers four schools; it is not an allocation stated separately for each of the two takeover projects.
For the affected school communities, the latest announcement identifies the state government’s role in carrying the work forward. It does not announce completed buildings or a date when pupils will move into upgraded facilities. Project-by-project costs and completion dates were not set out in the October 18 report.
Kuching, Samarahan and Serian are among the Sarawak areas forecast to have thunderstorms on Monday afternoon, October 19.
MetMalaysia’s forecast issued on October 18 also puts rain in several areas during the morning, with Miri and Limbang the exceptions. For Kuching-area commuters, that means the possibility of wet weather is not confined to the afternoon journey home.
The afternoon thunderstorm forecast covers Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang. Temperatures across Sarawak are expected to range from 24°C to 34°C.
Conditions are expected to differ at night. Rain is forecast for Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang, while none is forecast for Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei. This is the outlook for October 19, not a report of a storm already affecting every listed area or a flood alert.
走到美里 Jalan Bendahara 的路口，先映入眼帘的未必是大伯公像，而是车流后方一层层绿色瓦顶。龙饰沿着屋脊伸展开来，旁边却就是日常买鱼、买菜的老城区。我会从这个距离开始看美里大伯公庙（Tua Pek Kong Temple, Miri）：先别急着进门，把庙和隔壁鱼市场放在同一个画面里，它为何坐落在这里，就容易理解多了。

这座庙的来历，和石油工业兴起时的美里分不开。工作与买卖的机会吸引华人移居，也让原本不大的聚落迅速聚集人口。庙宇的创立故事说，当年疫病流行，居民在河边设坛祈安，后来于1913年建庙酬谢大伯公。这段地方记忆，讲的是离乡谋生的人怎样寻求庇护、凝聚彼此，并不是用宗教仪式解释疾病消退的医学结论。
把目光从神像移回街道，会发现这里不是刻意选出来的观光舞台。河岸、鱼市场、庙宇与买日用品的街区，本来就是同一套生活路线：有人来祈福，也有人来买当天的渔获。今天沿着市场走一小段，再回头看庙，比只拍一张正面照，更能读懂早期商贸聚落如何留下自己的公共空间。

再往上看，庙顶与巨大立像的比例很有意思。七米高的大伯公像在2023年4月安装，是扩建与美化计划的一部分；它不是1913年就站在这里的老物件。小尺度的殿宇和后来扩展的场地并列，恰好提醒人：这不是一座百年来完全没变的建筑。1977年已有过一次重要翻修；社区后来持续捐献、修补、增建，才有了眼前一层叠一层的样子。看懂新旧的差别，比把所有装饰都当作“百年古迹”更有收获。
文中的照片拍于2023至2024年，保留了扩建期间的面貌；围挡与施工范围不能照着旧照片认定。2025年8月另有50万令吉修缮拨款公布，修复还特别涉及传统雕刻与建筑工艺。到场时我会先看现行入口和围栏，再向照看庙宇的人确认能走到哪里，不为拍摄绕进作业区域，也不把整个园区都已完工当作前提。

这里的意义，也不止建筑保育。2026年5月的大游神有超过七千人参与，队伍包括外地团体与不同文化社群。平日来访当然不会自动遇上这场庆典，但知道它仍能把这么多人聚在一起，就比较明白：庙前扩展的空间，不只是为了让游客拍照，更是活着的社区传统需要使用的地方。
若只是短暂停留，我会把时间花在屋脊龙饰、墙面装饰，以及殿宇和大伯公立像之间的空间关系。有人上香时先让出通道，拍摄信众之前征求同意，哪里可以站、哪里暂时不能进，听从现场人员指引。不把参拜场所当成随时配合镜头的布景，反而比较看得见它的日常。

我会把这站排进美里老城的一个早上：看鱼市场，绕中央市场一带的街道，再找地方吃早餐。喜欢地方史、已经住在美里的旅人，值得顺路停下来；若期待大型展览馆、足够玩一整天的园区，或以为每天都有游神队伍，落差就会很大。单为这一座庙从古晋当天来回，也不是我会推荐的安排。
导航可用 美里大伯公庙 Google Maps，位置在 Jalan Bendahara、老鱼市场旁。白天较方便观察瓦顶与装饰，到场再确认当日通行范围。行程别只留给庙门里面，旁边仍在运转的市场，正是读懂这段美里故事的另一半。
At the corner of Jalan Bendahara, green roof tiles and curling dragons sit beside traffic lights rather than behind a museum lawn. That is where I would begin with Miri’s Tua Pek Kong Temple: not by counting the decorations, but by looking at how tightly a place of worship still fits into the old trading town. The fish market next door makes more sense of its position than a stand-alone photograph ever could.

The temple’s origin belongs to the unsettled early years of the oil town. Chinese workers and traders were among the people drawn to Miri as the petroleum industry expanded. The community’s founding story links the temple to an epidemic and a riverside ritual, followed by the establishment of a shrine in gratitude in 1913. I would read that as a record of how people sought protection and built solidarity in an unfamiliar town—not as a medical explanation for why an epidemic ended.
The river mattered here before the street scene took its present form. Worship, landing fish and buying provisions were neighbours, not separate sightseeing categories. The temple beside the fish market lets you read those overlapping routines on foot. It is a better starting point for understanding old Miri than treating every historic building as an isolated monument.

Look upward, then back toward the compound. The tiled roofs belong to the smaller-scale temple, while a seven-metre Tua Pek Kong statue rises above it. That statue was installed in April 2023 as part of a much larger extension and beautification programme. The contrast is useful: the landmark is not simply an untouched piece of 1913. A major renovation in 1977 already marked an earlier round of renewal; generations of donations, repairs and new building have continued to reshape it. The older temple and the enlarged surroundings tell different chapters of the same community story.
The photographs here were taken in 2023–24, during that changing phase; they are not a promise that today’s barriers or building works will look identical. In August 2025 a further RM500,000 restoration allocation was announced, with particular attention to traditional carving and architectural expertise. I would not assume every corner is accessible just because the temple remains a visitor landmark. Follow the current entrance and any on-site restrictions rather than stepping around works for a cleaner shot.

Nor is this only a story of stone, tiles and timber. In May 2026 the temple’s grand procession brought together more than 7,000 participants, including visiting groups and different cultural communities. An ordinary-day stop cannot reproduce that event, but it helps explain why the compound has grown beyond the scale of a small shrine. This is an organising place for living traditions, not a stage set left behind by the oil boom.
For a first visit, I would give the roofline, wall decoration and the relationship between the hall and the much larger statue more attention than the number of photographs taken. Keep clear of people praying, ask before photographing worshippers, and let attendants indicate where visitors may stand. A working religious space is easier to appreciate when you do not expect it to behave like an exhibition.

I would combine this with a morning walk around the old fish market and nearby central-market streets, then stop for breakfast in the old town. That route is the attraction: the temple explains the neighbourhood, and the neighbourhood gives the temple a human scale. History-minded visitors already staying in Miri can make a worthwhile short detour; someone expecting an extensive museum, a full-day attraction or a guaranteed procession on arrival may be disappointed. It is not a sensible day trip from Kuching just for this one stop.
Use Tua Pek Kong Temple, Miri on Google Maps, beside the old fish market at Jalan Bendahara. Choose daylight for reading the architectural details, check the day’s access with the attendant, and leave some room in the plan for the streets around it. Here, the most revealing view is often the one that keeps the market in the picture.
Sarawak’s Genevie Lim and partner Low Zi Yu have secured Malaysia’s first women’s doubles title at the BWF World Junior Championships, winning the final in Cairo on October 17.
They beat a Japanese pair 15–7, 9–15, 15–12, adding a world junior gold to the Asian junior bronze they won in Japan three months earlier. The Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) said no Malaysian women’s doubles pair had previously won the title since the championships began in 1992.
For Sarawak, Lim’s success also highlights a development path that has involved both state and national support. SBA said it continued supporting her after she returned from the national setup and later recommended her return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia.
The state association says it will give Lim a special cash reward for the title. No amount was specified in its announcement.

会长蔡文铎（Jonathan Chai）10月17日在古晋Unifor Complex举行的商联周年晚宴上提出，企业的用人需求与营运条件并不相同，中小企尤其未必有足够资源吸收额外开销。
他促请政府持续与商界沟通，检讨Foreign Workers Transformation Approach（FWTA）的执行方式，在维持良好治理与人力管理目标的同时，使规定更务实、费用更可负担。
这是一项要求检讨的呼吁，并不代表FWTA已暂停，或雇主须遵守的规定已经更改。
蔡文铎也欢迎拟议的经商便利改革蓝图，期望能简化程序、加快审批及改善部门协调。对雇主而言，接下来要区分的是商界提出的诉求与政府正式公布的执行调整，不能把两者当成同一件事。
The Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) wants the state government to review how the Foreign Workers Transformation Approach (FWTA) is implemented, with particular attention to smaller firms’ compliance costs.
Its president, Jonathan Chai, said industries have different staffing needs and operating conditions, while SMEs may have fewer resources to absorb additional costs. He called for continued engagement with businesses so requirements remain practical without weakening the government’s workforce-management objectives.
Chai made the appeal at SBF’s anniversary dinner at the Unifor Complex in Kuching on October 17. The request is for an implementation review; it is not an announcement that FWTA has been suspended or that employers’ requirements have changed.
He also welcomed the planned Ease of Doing Business Reform Blueprint, saying simpler procedures, quicker approvals and better coordination between agencies should translate into less administrative work for businesses. For employers, the distinction matters: the federation is asking for changes, rather than setting out a new compliance regime.
A RM39.2 million upgrade of the Nanga Ngungun–Nanga Bat road is targeting completion in September 2028, improving a rural link in Sarawak’s Ngemah constituency.
The project covers 4.2km of former logging road, to be upgraded to R1 standard. It is one section of the wider Nanga Ngungun–Nanga Jagau route, rather than an upgrade of that entire road.
The Borneo Post reported that a commencement ceremony was held at Nanga Ngungun on October 17. The Rural and Regional Development Ministry project is being implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR).
For communities along the route, the intended benefit is better access between settlements and to essential services. The September 2028 target sets the delivery timetable for those improvements.

Paez had won their June 2025 bout by split decision. The distinction matters: that first contest divided the judges, while the return bout produced agreement in Ghazali’s favour, not a knockout.

古晋南市准备把闭路电视覆盖范围从商业区扩至住宅区，但197台的需求目前仍是规划，并非已获足额拨款的安装承诺。
古晋南市市长黄鸿圣（Wee Hong Seng）10月17日在Kenyalang Park Community Association出席居民交流活动时表示，经费不足，市政局会先处理较重要地点，包括住宅区出入口，同时争取更多拨款。计划预期在2027及2028年落实。
南市目前有67台闭路电视，主要设在商业区。黄鸿圣估计，辖区总数可能增至约140台或更多；这个数字与住宅区本身所需的197台，属于不同口径，不能当成197台已经全部获批。
地点选择由南市市政局负责，再向执行单位提出建议；砂拉越数码经济机构（SDEC）负责落实，系统将连接砂拉越综合行动中心（SIOC）。住宅区最终获安排的地点和次序，仍取决于后续规划及经费。
Kuching South’s plan to extend CCTV coverage into residential neighbourhoods is still being drawn up, with 197 cameras identified as the residential requirement rather than a fully funded installation programme.
Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng said on October 17 that the council would prioritise important sites, including neighbourhood entrances and exits, while seeking more funding. Implementation is envisaged for 2027 and 2028.
MBKS already has 67 cameras, mostly in commercial areas. Wee said the overall number could rise to around 140 or more, but that projection is separate from the 197-camera requirement for residential areas alone. Neither figure confirms that every proposed location has funding.
Speaking at Kenyalang Park Community Association, he said MBKS would identify and recommend sites, while Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation would handle implementation. The system would link to the Sarawak Integrated Operation Centre.

Traders in Telaga Air face closer checks on price displays and weighing equipment after the area was designated Sarawak’s Tourism Compliance Zone 2026.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) says the initiative strengthens monitoring of existing trade laws in places visited by tourists. Its state-level launch took place at the Kampung Telaga Air community hall on October 17.
For customers, the checks centre on clear prices, verified weighing and measuring instruments, and accurate product information. The designation brings those everyday sales practices into sharper enforcement focus; it is not a new price list for the area.
KPDN says consumers can report suspected breaches through its official WhatsApp channel, e-Aduan portal, call centre or Ez Adu KPDN mobile application.
