Miri Airport’s planned expansion is being shaped around two goals: handling more passengers and giving the terminal a recognisably local identity.
Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the RM445 million project, approved in April, is expected to raise annual passenger-handling capacity from about two million to four million. That is a target for the upgraded airport, not its current operating capacity.
At a design engagement in Miri on October 8, Lee called for the interior to reflect the art and craftsmanship of the Orang Ulu community, including the heritage of Miri, Baram and the Kelabit Highlands. He stressed that cultural elements must be represented accurately and respectfully, while keeping the terminal safe, accessible and efficient.
The October 7–9 engagement brings together the federal Public Works Department project team, cultural associations, artists and local craftspeople to gather views on the proposed interior concept. Local input is therefore being sought while the design is taking shape, rather than simply selecting decorations for a finished terminal.
For travellers using northern Sarawak’s air gateway, the capacity figure concerns the airport’s ability to handle passengers. It does not establish new airline routes or additional flight frequencies; those are separate from this terminal-design consultation.
