MBKS is working with developers to arrange temporary accommodation and urgent repairs for Kuching South households damaged by Tuesday’s storm. Residents who cannot safely remain at home are to be housed temporarily first. The council then plans to cover exposed sections, inspect the damage and work out the scope and cost of repairs with the developers. At Kampung Tabuan Dayak, roofing sheets torn from a nearby apartment block hit one home at about 3pm on Aug 25. A mother-in-law and child who were inside escaped unhurt. Fallen trees and other storm damage were also reported around Kuching, but the latest update did not say how many homes need assistance or when all repairs will be completed. Anyone facing an unstable roof or loose building material should keep clear of the affected area, especially if more rain arrives. Call emergency services if there is immediate danger, and do not enter a damaged structure until it is safe.

Kuching's Air Pollutant Index (API) reading reached 175 at 8am on Aug 24, putting the city in the unhealthy range. Five Sarawak locations recorded unhealthy readings at 8am: Serian (189), Kuching (175), Samarahan (170), Sri Aman (158) and Bintulu (108). Kuching's reading was 175, down slightly from 177 at 4pm on Sunday. An API reading of 101–200 is classed as unhealthy, while 201–300 is very unhealthy. These are 8am readings, not a live noon update, so check the latest official reading before planning outdoor activities. Kuching South City Council (MBKS) distributed face masks at Kenyalang Market and Sungai Apong Market on Aug 23. Children, senior citizens and people sensitive to poor air quality should cut down unnecessary outdoor activity, wear a suitable mask, stay hydrated and seek medical attention if they have breathing difficulty. For people who must go outdoors, the useful detail is fit: a well-sealed N95, KN95 or KF94 offers better particle protection than a loose face covering. Children, older people and anyone with asthma or heart or lung conditions should keep outdoor exertion down while the reading remains unhealthy.

Some places in Kuching do not need a big plan. You finish work, want fresh air, maybe bring the kids out for a short run-around, and MBKS Garden Park is exactly that kind of place. [image: 1787105415154-img0.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS [image: 1787105415264-img1.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS [image: 1787105415401-img2.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS [image: 1787105415517-img3.jpg] Source: Google Maps contributors / Kuching Park MBKS So yes, this is not a dramatic waterfall or mountain viewpoint. It is more like a practical local green space. That is also the charm. If you are staying around Padungan or city centre, you can just Grab over, walk one round, let the kids play, take a few photos, then continue makan nearby. My take: MBKS Park is a useful everyday Kuching stop rather than a headline attraction. I would use it for an evening walk, a short jog or family downtime, then continue to Padungan for food. Useful info: Location: Kuching Park MBKS, around Jalan Padungan / MBKS area, 93450 Kuching Hours: Open 24 hours ️ Entry: Free Facilities: Public toilet, playground, jogging paths, cycling lanes, lake area Parking: Public parking around the MBKS area, but expect crowding during Kuching Festival season ️ Notes: Best time is early morning or after 5pm. Bring water and mosquito repellent. Reviews also mention no pets inside the park. Would you go here for a morning walk, evening jog, or just bring kids to the playground?

A severe thunderstorm swept through Kuching on Saturday evening, bringing rain that eased the haze but leaving damage across the city. MBKS said response teams were sent out after roofs were blown off, trees were uprooted, electricity cables were affected and flash floods were reported in several areas. At Taman Riverview in Pending, a fallen tree blocked the road. A local Kapitan and his wife began clearing it with a chainsaw before being warned about the safety risks. Bomba also attended incidents at Jalan Chong Chin Kong and Jalan Ming Ching near Jalan Foochow. As a safety measure, MBKS ordered stalls at the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion to stop operations after strong winds damaged about half of its canopy. Residents affected by the storm can notify MBKS, while the public is advised to avoid exposed roads during thunderstorms. The danger does not end when the rain stops: fallen trees, loose roofing, flooded roads and damaged cables can remain hazardous. Residents should avoid affected routes and report damage to the council or emergency services rather than entering the area to take photos.

"Don't dirty public spaces to beautify your home" — MBKS warns of RM2,000 fine for illegal dumping. [image: Screenshot-2026-08-08-153940-1.png?resize=696%2C393&ssl=1] Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has issued a stern reminder: illegal dumping of garden, construction and household waste carries a RM2,000 compound, with possible court action. Speaking during his ShallWeeTalk live session today, Wee said the council continues to find waste dumped along roadsides, in drains and public spaces despite repeated warnings. "Do not make your own surroundings look beautiful by turning public spaces and grass verges into dumping grounds. That is wrong and reflects a lack of civic consciousness," he said. The fine cannot be waived. If CCTV or neighbour statements capture the offence, the case can proceed to court. Wee also highlighted household rubbish — including used cooking oil bottles — being found in drains: "How did these items end up in drains when they are supposed to be thrown into bins? They certainly did not walk there on their own."

Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh says KL can learn from Kuching Festival's 'food ecosystem' — from farm to marketing Yeoh visited the Kuching Festival grounds on Aug 7 together with DBKL Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud and his team, hosted by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. This was her second visit. She said her daughters first discovered the festival on TikTok during SUKMA and encouraged her to come. "I felt the concept was very unique and very vibrant. There is a lot of youth and young people's energy, and it was very clean," she said. After taking over the Federal Territories portfolio, Yeoh said she told DBKL its officers should visit Kuching to study how the festival was organised and how fresh ideas from young people were incorporated. "We are here to look into the entire ecosystem, not just this food festival, but also the ecosystem from farm to marketing. How you actually activate so many different industries based on one concept of just promoting food culture here." She cited MBKS' Natural Farmers Market as another initiative that could provide learning opportunities for KL. DBKL Mayor Fadlun described the visit as a good experience: "This is something new for us in Kuala Lumpur. Maybe we can learn from Kuching South to adopt this concept."

Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has proposed regular meetings among UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy in Asia to strengthen cultural ties and culinary exchange. The proposal came as delegates from China's Quanzhou, Chaozhou, Chengdu, Macau, Eastern Guangdong, and Iloilo, Philippines, visited the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion at MBKS Jubilee Ground during the Kuching Food Festival 2026. "Food reflects a community's history, culture and identity. Although we come from different countries and cultures, our shared passion for gastronomy has brought us together as one family," Wee said. The mayor said closer cooperation among Asian gastronomy cities would help showcase the richness of Asian culinary traditions while encouraging more visitors to experience each city's unique food culture. Jalan Mendu road works are delayed, but MBKS says the project is now targeted for Sept 15 completion. [image: 1785643462063-jalan_mendu_20260802.jpg] KUCHING, Aug 2: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) says the Jalan Mendu Upgrading Project was held back by a clash between planned drainage works and an existing live water supply pipeline. MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the pipeline's actual location did not match available utility records and project drawings. What MBKS says The contractor is waiting for final approval from Sarawak Water to relocate the pipeline. Once approval is given, the relocation is expected to take about three days before culvert construction and reinstatement works resume. MBKS has also ordered safety fixes at the site after temporary barriers were found improperly arranged, with exposed reinforcement steel that could endanger motorcyclists and pedestrians. Road users are asking MBKS and the contractor to fix the Jalan Mendu flood mitigation worksite before someone gets hurt. [image: 1785319527664-jln_mendu_20260729.jpg] The concern is over exposed metal rods used to hold temporary plastic barriers at the worksite. Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen's special assistant, Michael Kong Feng Nian, said the setup could be dangerous, especially for motorcyclists. He said some barriers had also been found toppled or scattered on the road, making the stretch harder to read in poor visibility. What residents are worried about Exposed rods could cause serious injuries in a crash Fallen barriers may create extra hazards for drivers and riders The flood mitigation project was scheduled to finish on Feb 9 but is now close to six months behind schedule Kong asked Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the contractor to review the site immediately, remove the exposed rods, and make sure all temporary barriers follow proper safety standards. Kuching's RM2.6 billion flood mitigation project is back in the spotlight, after a call for MBKS to use its RM300 million reserves. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng questioned whether that reserve fund could realistically cover a project of that size. [image: 1785125110348-mbks_flood_reserve-resized.jpg] Source: The Borneo Post What happened Wee said MBKS has about RM300 million in reserves, while the wider flood mitigation project for Kuching is estimated at RM2.6 billion. His point was simple: even if the council used the reserve, it would still be far short of the amount needed. He also said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof had already announced that major flood mitigation projects in Sarawak would start progressively from 2027. Why people are talking The issue came after Michael Kong, special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman, urged MBKS to review its priorities and consider using part of its reserves for drainage and flood mitigation works. Kong argued that financial prudence should not become an excuse for inaction when long-standing infrastructure problems are affecting residents. Wee pushed back, saying large-scale flood mitigation falls under federal responsibility and should not be turned into another political issue. Location: Kuching South / MBKS area Details: RM2.6 billion flood mitigation project; RM300 million MBKS reserve fund; federal rollout expected from 2027 Source: The Borneo Post For Kuching residents who deal with flash floods, the big question is whether the money and timeline can match the actual problem on the ground. MBKS wants to bring mobile health screening into schools across Kuching South, focusing on staff, teachers and parents. [image: 1785114344953-mbks_health_school-resized.jpg] Image source: The Borneo Post Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the programme is meant to help people detect health problems earlier, especially those who often put work and family ahead of check-ups. The latest Health Screening Programme 4.0 was held at the basement of Song Kheng Hai Food Court, with support from the Lions Club and Diabetes Malaysia. MBKS had earlier carried out similar outreach in Kenyalang and Bintawa. Why Song Kheng Hai Wee said Song Kheng Hai was chosen because it is close to the KMC flats, where many B40 residents live. He said MBKS will continue moving the service around the Kuching South area so more people can access basic screening and consultation. The programme also involves volunteers, including retired medical professionals and younger Leo Club members. Bintawa now has a new landmark: a roundabout featuring a traditional kotak fishing boat to honour Kuching’s early fishing community. [image: 1784595888415-bintawa-kotak-roundabout.jpg] Source: DayakDaily The Bintawa Kotak Roundabout was officially launched on July 20, with the landmark built around a traditional wooden fishing boat once widely used by Bintawa fishermen. Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng said Bintawa was one of Kuching’s earliest fishing settlements. Many early Chinese immigrants settled there because of its close link to the Sarawak River, where fishing supplied fresh seafood to the growing city. He said the kotak boat symbolises the courage and resilience of local fishermen, and that the city should keep these stories visible even as Kuching continues to modernise. MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, Bintawa community leaders and MBKS councillors were also present.
