A riverside house at Kampung Bintawa Tengah in Kuching collapsed on October 3, leaving a family of five unhurt but also damaging the supports of a neighbouring home. The Fire and Rescue Department said the adjacent house had become unstable after debris struck its support posts. Four people lived there. Firefighters put up safety barriers around the affected house and advised its occupants to take precautions. The family from the collapsed house is staying with a relative. In a later account, the mother said she and her three daughters had been at their kuih stall, while her husband was away at work when the house gave way. Some documents were recovered, but the daughters’ identity cards remained in a submerged bedroom. Bomba received the report at 1.16pm on Saturday. Petra Jaya firefighters arrived at 1.22pm; no rescue operation was needed, and the response with police ended at 2.14pm. The immediate safety concern therefore extends beyond the house that fell into the river. The adjoining structure was also left unsafe for occupation. The family’s temporary accommodation does not resolve that separate structural risk.

Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng said Bintawa was one of Kuching’s earliest fishing settlements. Many early Chinese immigrants settled there because of its close link to the Sarawak River, where fishing supplied fresh seafood to the growing city. He said the kotak boat symbolises the courage and resilience of local fishermen, and that the city should keep these stories visible even as Kuching continues to modernise.
