Sarawak is aiming for 20,000 homes over the next five years under the 13th Malaysia Plan, with first-time buyers among the intended beneficiaries. The statewide target is not the size of the housing project handed over in Miri on Oct 29. That separate development, Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP) Permyjaya III, comprises 101 single-storey terrace houses with a total scheme value of RM33.9 million. DayakDaily's Oct 29 report, citing TVS coverage of the handover, said the wider programme would involve the private sector and both the Sarawak and federal governments. Around 3,000 to 4,000 units were built over the previous five years, according to the account. The standards outlined for the homes include at least 700 square feet of floor space, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and parking. For prospective buyers, the announcement therefore covers both the scale of planned supply and the basic accommodation expected—not just a headline unit count. It does not, however, give a Kuching allocation, selling prices or an application timetable. The RM33.9 million figure belongs to the Miri scheme as a whole; it is not a quoted purchase price for an individual home. Buyers will still need the details of specific developments before they can assess eligibility and affordability.

i-CATS University College is now Sarawak Tun Openg University of Technology, using the official abbreviation TAHOTECH. Its new name, logo and corporate identity were unveiled on Oct 29. The change follows recognition as a full university by the Ministry of Higher Education on Oct 20, according to DayakDaily. These are separate milestones: university recognition came first, followed by the public unveiling of the new identity nine days later. For Sarawak students and families following i-CATS, TAHOTECH refers to that institution’s new identity, not a separately announced university. The report says the ministry approved the name on the recommendation of its board of directors. The institution’s stated direction centres on skilled graduates, research and technological innovation. Those are development aims; the naming announcement does not itself establish a new course offering, admission deadline or change in fees. The recognition letter was presented at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex on Oct 20. That ceremony venue should not be confused with a new campus location: the report gives no campus relocation announcement.

AI basics will be formally included in primary-school Digital Technology under the 2027 school curriculum, before being reinforced at secondary level, the Education Ministry told Parliament on Oct 29. For Kuching families, the change concerns what pupils will learn, rather than a new standalone AI examination. See Hua Daily News reported that the curriculum will cover more than technical skills: pupils are to learn to check information, question doubtful answers and exercise judgment. The ministry also outlined offline learning approaches for rural and remote pupils facing connectivity problems. That matters for Sarawak communities where an Internet-dependent lesson would be difficult to follow; it is not a claim that every school has already received new digital equipment. The announcement was made during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat in Kuala Lumpur. It described a national curriculum direction, not a Kuching-only programme or a separate timetable for Sarawak schools. Teacher preparation remains part of the wider rollout. The Star reported that 329,414 teachers nationwide had received AI training, with training continuing. That national total does not identify how many trained teachers are in Sarawak or establish that every local school is ready for the same level of classroom use.

Sungai Asap Health Clinic in Sarawak is one of four rural facilities identified for a proposed cottage hospital initiative, which would add facilities such as observation wards. The plan is to bring appropriate inpatient care closer to remote communities where hospitals are difficult to reach. A Bernama report carried by DayakDaily on Oct 29 said the Health Ministry outlined the proposal during its policy-stage winding-up debate on the Supply Bill 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 28. For Sungai Asap residents, the important distinction is between being identified for an upgrade and having new wards ready for patients. The report does not give a construction start, completion date, bed count or operating date for the clinic. The other facilities named are Tekek Health Clinic on Pulau Tioman in Pahang, and the Telupid and Nabawan clinics in Sabah. Sungai Asap is the Sarawak facility in that four-clinic list, not an announcement that every rural clinic in the state will receive the same upgrade. The ministry described the cottage hospital approach as an upgrade to selected existing clinics. The proposal is therefore not a notice of a newly opened full hospital, nor confirmation that additional inpatient services are already available in Sungai Asap.

Limbang is to get a new Road Transport Department (JPJ) complex backed by an approved RM28.7 million allocation, with construction scheduled to take 24 months. The project includes three blocks of staff quarters. Sarawak Tribune reported that the groundbreaking took place on Oct 28, marking the start of a new facilities project rather than the opening of a replacement service centre. The contractor has been urged to aim for 18 months without reducing specifications or quality. That is a request to accelerate delivery; the stated construction schedule remains 24 months. No exact opening date was given in the report. For residents of Limbang and nearby areas, the intended benefit is a more comfortable, customer-friendly place to handle JPJ matters, alongside improved working facilities for staff. The report does not announce a counter relocation or any immediate change to where motorists should go for services. A vehicle inspection centre at the site has also been suggested as a future addition. It is not presented as an approved part of the RM28.7 million project, so motorists should not read the groundbreaking as confirmation that inspection services will be available there.

Google Maps

If your Sibu itinerary already has a market breakfast and a walk by the Rajang, I would give Sungai Merah a different job: a short stop to understand how a riverside settlement became part of the town's story. Wong Nai Siong Memorial Garden is not a big landscaped attraction to spend half a day in. Its strongest feature is the connection between one man's memorial, a riverbank and the community around them. [image: 1793249839585-wong-photo-0.jpg] Google Map / Wong Nai Siong Memorial Park Start with the bust rather than a long checklist of photo spots. Behind it, the curved memorial wall carries Chinese writing; in front, shallow grass-covered tiers step down towards the paved space. The scale is useful. You can look at the figure and the surroundings together instead of treating the monument as an isolated object. I would pause here before walking towards the river, because the water gives the memorial its context. Wong Nai Siong led Foochow settlers from China to Sibu in 1901, and Sungai Merah is associated with that early settlement and landing. The garden was created in his honour. That relationship is the reason I would make this detour: the memorial is attached to a place in the migration story, not simply to a famous name placed in any available square. The bust identifies the person; the river helps explain why the settlement formed here. You do not need to turn the stop into a lecture. If you are travelling with family, a useful question is what the river meant before the road journey became the obvious way to think about getting here. Looking from the memorial towards the channel makes the settlement story easier to picture. It shifts the conversation away from collecting another landmark and towards the practical relationship between a river and a new community. [image: 1793249839704-wong-photo-3.jpg] Google Map / Wong Nai Siong Memorial Park The memorial wall and stepped lawn in a night-time photograph. The wall's form matters as much as the bust. It brings a line of writing into the same view as a small open public space. Rather than rushing to photograph every panel, I would choose one position where the wall, figure and riverbank make sense together. Visitors who enjoy local history will get more from that slow look than anyone expecting a large museum with a long indoor exhibition. This is an outdoor memorial garden, and I would plan it that way. A walk towards the riverside then changes the scale of the visit. Shopfronts and everyday activity sit close to the memorial precinct. That makes the stop more interesting to me than a monument cut off from the town: the history is surrounded by an inhabited neighbourhood. It also calls for a little restraint. Leave space for people going about their day, keep photography away from identifiable diners and do not treat neighbouring businesses as part of a free attraction. [image: 1793249839813-wong-photo-4.jpg] Google Map / Wong Nai Siong Memorial Park A night-time riverbank view beside the memorial precinct; lighting and conditions can change. For a first visit I would choose daylight, then keep the route short enough to fit around the rest of Sibu rather than build the whole day around it. Daylight makes the writing, the bust and the relationship with the river easier to follow. Bring ordinary sun and rain protection, take care at road crossings and the water's edge, and use the paths that are actually open when you arrive. A photograph of an illuminated riverbank is not a reason to assume a particular evening display will be operating. [image: 1793249839932-wong-photo-extra.jpg] Google Map / Wong Nai Siong Memorial Park A panoramic view of the memorial garden; the curved projection widens the scene. I would send a history-minded visitor here, especially someone curious about Sibu's Foochow roots. I would not sell it as a major theme park, a guaranteed night attraction or a substitute for the town's museums. The worthwhile part is smaller and more specific: spend time at the bust, turn towards Sungai Merah, and leave with a clearer relationship between a person, a settlement and a river.

Kuching recorded an Air Pollutant Index of 52 at 8am on Thursday, Oct 29, placing it in the moderate category rather than the good category. Nearby stations did not all give the same picture. Samarahan registered 37 and Serian 50, both within the good range, while Lundu stood at 56, also moderate. The Borneo Post reported the figures from the Natural Resources and Environment Board’s Sarawak API status report. The boundary matters when comparing the numbers: readings from 0 to 50 are classified as good, and 51 to 100 as moderate. Kuching was therefore just above the good-air threshold; its reading should not be substituted for Samarahan’s or treated as a single measure for the whole area. Elsewhere in the state, Belaga recorded 33 and Samalaju 71. These figures describe the 8am monitoring snapshot, not conditions guaranteed for the rest of Thursday. Anyone following changes through the day should compare the relevant station and reporting time, rather than read the morning figure as an all-day forecast.

RON97 rises to RM4.90 a litre and unsubsidised RON95 to RM4.42 from Oct 29 to Nov 4, while eligible BUDI95 users continue paying RM1.99 a litre. The Finance Ministry’s Oct 28 announcement sets a 10-sen increase for each unsubsidised petrol grade, from RM4.80 for RON97 and RM4.32 for RON95. The new weekly rates take effect on Thursday and also apply to petrol purchases in Kuching. For a 50-litre purchase, that increase adds RM5: RON97 costs RM245 instead of RM240, while unsubsidised RON95 costs RM221 instead of RM216. The calculation compares the same volume at the old and new rates, not a change in how much fuel a vehicle uses. The higher RON95 headline price is not the amount charged for an eligible subsidised BUDI95 purchase. The ministry says eligible Malaysians can continue buying subsidised fuel using MyKad, subject to their monthly eligibility limits. At RM1.99 a litre, 50 litres of BUDI95 would cost RM99.50, provided the purchase remains within those limits.

A 360-metre resurfacing job on Jalan Indah 3 in Miri’s Permai area has been completed, ahead of its original Nov 20 finishing target. See Hua Daily News reported on Oct 28 that the roughly RM300,000 project had reached 100 per cent completion after work began on Sept 21. Miri City Council officers accompanied an inspection of the finished section on Wednesday. The road is in an area affected by flooding earlier this year, but the completed surface is only one part of the infrastructure response. The report also described drain clearing and drainage improvements, including the removal of about 20 trees that had obstructed drainage or maintenance access. A separate RM3 million allocation has been approved for basic infrastructure and drainage improvements in communities previously hit by serious flooding. Those works were expected to begin progressively in the coming weeks; the report did not present them as already finished. For Permai residents, the distinction is between a specific road section now resurfaced and wider drainage work still to be delivered. Completion of the 360-metre job does not, on its own, establish that the surrounding flood problems have been resolved.

Black Bean — Google Maps

A walk around Kuching's Old Bazaar does not need to end with another generic café stop. At No. 87, Ewe Hai Street, Black Bean Coffee & Tea Co. gives the coffee itself a local connection: Sarawak-grown Liberica, alongside Robusta and other beans. I would put this on a daytime Chinatown wander rather than save it for an after-dinner drink. [image: 1793226953563-4.jpg] Google Map / Black Bean Coffee & Tea Co. Coffee at Black Bean. A roastery story behind the small shop Black Bean's story goes back to 2001. Founders Madam Han and Mr Chang built the business around personally roasting coffee and training its baristas. That matters more here than a long list of café decorations: this is a Sarawak roastery with a shop where you can explore what goes into the cup. The roasting operation is based at the company's Tabuan Jaya headquarters. Do not confuse that with the Ewe Hai Street counter, or assume that the larger La Promenade outlet's food menu and opening hours apply to this Old Bazaar stop. For a visitor on foot, the useful choice is the central location and the chance to make local coffee part of the walk. Start with the bean, then choose the drink I would begin by asking which Sarawak Liberica option is available that day. If you prefer milk and sweetness, the gula apong latte brings together Sarawak Liberica, Robusta and local palm sugar. It is a different starting point from ordering a familiar imported single-origin coffee; Black Bean offers those too, so tell the staff whether your priority is exploring local beans or sticking with your usual style. For a coffee-focused stop, keep the order simple and leave room for the rest of your Old Bazaar food walk. There is no need to turn it into a full brunch itinerary. If you want beans to take home, ask about the roast and the grind for your own brewing method rather than choosing only by the bag's appearance. Drink prices and available beans should be checked at the counter. [image: 1793226953846-5.jpg] Google Map / Black Bean Coffee & Tea Co. The No. 87 entrance on Ewe Hai Street. Make it a daytime stop The Ewe Hai Street shop is a daytime operation, generally around 9am–6pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday. Recheck before making a special trip, especially on public holidays. I would fit it before an afternoon walk towards the Waterfront, not build an evening plan around it. This recommendation is for the No. 87 shop, not another Black Bean branch. Address: 87, Jalan Ewe Hai, 93000 Kuching, Sarawak. Black Bean Coffee & Tea Co. — Google Maps
