  • Kubah National Park Guide — A Jungle Escape 20 Minutes from Kuching
    K kuchinghub

Kubah National Park is close enough to look like an easy morning, but I would plan it as a real rainforest outing. The road from Kuching is short; the change from city heat to wet forest, steep paths and waterfall country is immediate.

📸 Source: Kelvin Toh / Wikimedia Commons

Kubah’s identity comes from its three-peaked mountain landscape and extraordinary palm diversity—more than 90 palm species are recorded here. That is the detail I would ask visitors to notice instead of expecting a single blockbuster animal. Fronds, buttress roots, stream crossings and the layered canopy explain why this park matters even when wildlife stays hidden.

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Choose the route before arriving. A waterfall walk can fit a half-day, while summit trails demand stronger legs and more time; night frog outings are a separate guided idea, not something to improvise after dark. The visitor accounts that praise the park also repeatedly point to rain, slippery ground and the need to start early. If your perfect attraction has cafés, dry paths and guaranteed sightings, Kubah may disappoint. Hikers, birders, plant-curious travellers and families with older children will find more to follow.

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Allow about 30 minutes by car from central Kuching, then give yourself 2–4 hours depending on the trail and stops. A car or arranged driver is the sensible plan because public transport does not solve the return from a forest entrance. Published tourism information lists daily operating hours around 8:00–5:00; fees, registration, guide requirements, trail closures and last entry can change, so check the current Forestry notice before setting off. Pack rain protection, water, shoes with grip and insect protection.

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

I would not combine every trail with Matang Wildlife Centre in one rushed day. Pick waterfall and forest texture for an easier first encounter, or commit to a longer hike if the mountain is the point of the trip. The park is worth a dedicated half-day for visitors who want Sarawak’s living ecology close to Kuching; it is the wrong choice for someone chasing a guaranteed orangutan or an effortless viewpoint.

📸 Source: Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Leave room for the forest to be quiet. In Kubah, the palm diversity and weather are not background decoration—they are the experience you came to notice.

  • Kubah National Park
    K kuchinghub

Kelvin Toh / Wikimedia Commons

Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

Angeline Ting / Wikimedia Commons

    K kuchinghub

  • Sibu Nears City Status After Reserves Surge to RM47 Million, Population Target in Sight
    K kuchinghub

Sibu is just RM3 million away from becoming Sarawak’s next city — its council reserves have more than doubled since 2019.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting announced today that the town’s financial reserves have grown to RM47 million, up sharply from RM19 million when he took office in 2019. The threshold for city status is RM50 million.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting speaking at a press conference after launching the WAK Sibu Festival 2026 calendar at Wisma Sanyan on May 26.

The second requirement — a population of 300,000 — is also being gradually met as Sibu sees demographic shifts and steady growth.

“When I became chairman in 2019, people often asked why Miri could be upgraded to a city but not Sibu. After reviewing the criteria, we were only short of two main requirements,” Ting said.

Sibu, long seen as a predominantly Chinese-majority town, is now becoming increasingly diverse, with a growing Iban population and broader ethnic representation.

  • Sarawak Cultural Village: Is It Worth Visiting? A Local Kuching Review
    K kuchinghub

Most people I know in Kuching had the same reaction when I said I was finally going to Sarawak Cultural Village: "Oh, that place?" — half curious, half skeptical. A 17-acre living museum at the foot of Mount Santubong, about 35 km north of town, opened in 1990 as a wholly-owned project of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation. And yes, it looks like a tourist attraction from the car park.

📸 Source: TripAdvisor - Aerial view of Sarawak Cultural Village

But walking through the gates changes the picture. Seven full-size traditional dwellings sit around a small lake — Bidayuh longhouse with its round headhouse, an Iban longhouse raised on tall stilts, the Penan forest hut, an Orang Ulu longhouse with its ornate painted facade, the towering Melanau tall-house, a Malay town house, and a Chinese farmhouse. Each one has a community member inside, wearing traditional dress, doing something real: weaving pua kumbu cloth, scraping sago, playing the sape, demonstrating blowpipe darts. They are not actors reading a script. They live in these communities and rotate through shifts.

    📸 Source: Travel+Leisure Asia

The twice-daily cultural show at 11:30 am and 4 pm is the main draw. It runs about 45 minutes and rotates through Iban ngajat dance, Orang Ulu sape music, Malay and Chinese performances, with moments of genuine humour and crowd participation. One performer balances a 20-kg block with his teeth; another pulls audience members up to learn a dance. The sape — often called the Borneo guitar — carries the music in a way that feels older than the village itself.

What surprised me most was the Rainforest World Music Festival connection. The village grounds host this international event every June — 2026 dates were 26–28 June — and during the festival the longhouses become workshop spaces. If you come during RWMF the experience is completely different: you are inside a global music event while standing in a replica Iban longhouse.

📸 Source: TripAdvisor - Inside the village grounds

The honest trade-off: this is a curated representation, not a real longhouse upriver where families actually sleep. If you have three spare days and can arrange a trip to a genuine Bidayuh or Iban community, skip the village. But most visitors do not have that time. For a half-day primer on Sarawak's ethnic diversity — with the convenience of paved paths, shade, air-conditioned spots and a lake view — the village does its job well.

RM135 for non-Malaysian adults and RM95 for Malaysians is not cheap by Kuching standards. A full breakfast at a kopitiam costs under RM10 and Bako National Park entry is RM20. You are paying resort-attraction prices. Booking online through scvticket.com.my saves RM10. The admission-plus-lunch package (RM168 international, RM138 Malaysian) adds a buffet that is decent but not the reason to come.

Getting there: about 45 minutes by car or Grab from central Kuching. No public bus goes door to door. Parking is free and ample. The Santubong Damai shuttle may work if you are staying in the resort area. Plan 2.5 to 3 hours to walk the loop and catch one show. Midday heat is real — bring water and sunscreen. The village closes at 5 pm and the last entry is before 4 pm so you can catch the afternoon show.

If you would rather have an uncut, uncurated cultural experience, aim for a real longhouse visit or the Sarawak Cultural Village during RWMF. If you have a free morning and want context before you explore the rest of Sarawak, this is the stop. What would you choose — the curated version or the real thing? Drop a comment.

    K kuchinghub

Travel+Lease Asia

  • Padungan's Iconic White Cat Statue Dressed in Gawai Dayak Attire as Symbol of Sarawak Unity
    K kuchinghub

The White Cat statue in Padungan is now wearing a printed songket-inspired red and green vest — a vibrant symbol of Gawai Dayak and Sarawak's cultural harmony.

The special attire was unveiled during a lighting ceremony at the iconic statue on May 26, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. He said the annual lighting tradition reflects Sarawak's inclusive spirit and the harmony among its people.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Selamat Hari Gawai, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai," Dr Sim said.

As people are travelling back for Gawai, Dr Sim reminded motorists to drive carefully. "Road conditions are improving, but please drive safely. If you drink, don't drive. If you drive, don't drink."

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng explained that a printed songket-inspired material was chosen instead of Pua Kumbu textile out of respect for Dayak cultural sensitivities. "When dressing the statue, it is important for us to consult and respect the cultures of others," he said.

The mayor also drew a parallel between the open-door tradition of longhouse culture and Sarawak's unity: "If you have been to a longhouse, all the pintu are 'buka' (open). This openness is the heartbeat of our Sarawak unity."

  • RM1k to Go Home for Gawai: Sarawakian Singer Miss Alvy Calls Out 'Unreasonable' Airfares

"How can a ticket to go back to my hometown for Gawai cost up to RM1,000? Isn't Borneo also part of Malaysia?"

Sarawakian singer and influencer Miss Alvy took to Threads today to call out what she describes as "unreasonable" flight prices ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebration.

She highlighted that a return ticket from Peninsular Malaysia to Borneo can cost up to RM1,000 — enough, she said, to travel overseas. Many netizens from Sabah and Sarawak chimed in, sharing their own horror stories of festive season airfares, with some saying return tickets can hit RM1,900.

According to Miss Alvy, many East Malaysians have been forced to delay returning home for years because of the high ticket prices. Some families can only reunite during major holidays, while others simply cannot afford it at all.

The post has reignited the long-standing debate about the high cost of air connectivity between Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia, especially during festive seasons like Gawai and Hari Raya.

  • Bako National Park — Sarawak's Oldest National Park, Just an Hour from Kuching
    K kuchinghub

If I have one full day from Kuching for wildlife, I would start before the city gets hot and aim for Bako’s Kampung Bako jetty—not because the park is the easiest box to tick, but because the short boat ride is part of the arrival. The skyline gives way to mangrove, sandstone and a coastline that feels much farther away than the drive suggests.

    Bako National Park sea stack
Borneo mobilegrapher / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

The park suits travellers who enjoy choosing a trail, watching for movement and accepting that wildlife follows its own timetable. Proboscis monkeys, macaques, monitor lizards and wild boar are possibilities, not a guaranteed show. That is the honest trade: you get a compact taste of rainforest, beach, cliff, mangrove and kerangas landscapes, but anyone expecting a smooth, air-conditioned attraction may find the heat, insects, uneven paths and boat timing a lot.

    Teluk Assam panorama
Borneo mobilegrapher / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

From central Kuching, allow roughly an hour by road to Kampung Bako, then around 20 minutes by boat, with weather and sea conditions able to stretch the schedule. I would keep the day flexible: take an easier walk around the headquarters and coast if travelling with children or older family members, or reserve several hours for a longer trail only when everyone is comfortable with heat and mud. The boat back is the part not to gamble with, so ask the operator for the day’s last return and leave a generous buffer.

The park and jetty arrangement, trail access, conservation rules, fees and boat charges can change with weather, maintenance or management updates. Published figures are often quoted around RM10/RM5 for Malaysian adults/children and RM20/RM7 for foreign adults/children, before transport and boat costs; treat those as a planning guide, not a promise. Bring water, sun protection, mosquito repellent and sealed food—macaques are a good reason not to leave snacks loose. Check the Sarawak Forestry Corporation notice and the day’s jetty update before leaving, especially after heavy rain or if a trail is under repair.

I would give Bako a full day, not squeeze it between two city attractions. It is worth the boat and the early start for travellers who want a real outdoor day near Kuching; it will disappoint anyone who needs guaranteed animal sightings or a polished resort-style walk. Pack light, keep your eyes on the trees, and let the return boat set the pace.

    Teluk Assam

Semenggoh works best when the day has one clear purpose: leave Kuching early, arrive before a feeding session, and allow the forest to decide how much of the story you get. It is a rehabilitation centre, not a zoo with animals waiting beside a glass panel. The orangutans may come close, stay in the trees or remain out of sight, and that uncertainty is part of why the visit matters.

For a first Kuching wildlife outing, I would choose the morning session when possible and arrive with enough time for registration, the walk and ranger instructions. Commonly published feeding windows are around 9:00–10:00am and 3:00–4:00pm, but the timetable and viewing arrangements can change. Rain, natural food in the forest, animal welfare decisions and maintenance can all mean fewer sightings. Anyone who needs a guaranteed close-up, loud entertainment or a quick indoor attraction may leave disappointed; patient families, photographers and travellers who care about conservation are the better match.

The centre is on Jalan Puncak Borneo, roughly 30 minutes from central Kuching by car in normal traffic. Parking is the simple option; e-hailing is possible for the outbound ride, but I would not depend on finding a return car immediately in a forest setting. Give the visit about two to three hours, then pair it with a nearby lunch or a slow drive towards Padawan rather than trying to stack several distant attractions around a fixed feeding time.

Entry prices, visitor rules and session details are subject to the current Sarawak Forestry Corporation notice; older guides quote Malaysian adult/child tickets around RM10/RM5 and foreign adult/child tickets around RM20/RM10. Check the latest notice before setting out, and treat “open daily” listings as a starting point rather than proof that every viewing area or session is operating that day. Do not bring food to feed the animals, keep your distance, avoid flash, wear shoes with grip and bring mosquito repellent. If the centre posts a closure, repair or changed-session notice, let that update change the itinerary.

I would choose Semenggoh over a rushed checklist when the goal is to understand why a semi-wild sanctuary feels different from a zoo. It is a strong half-day plan from Kuching, but not a promise of a perfect animal photograph. Arrive quietly, listen to the rangers, and leave the forest a little more important than the picture you hoped to take.

  • 🦧 Semenggoh Wildlife Centre —
    K kuchinghub

    Semenggoh 人猿
DIONYSIUS IVANDER / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

  • 13 Detained at Lubok Antu-Badau Border Including Two Children and Local Man in Migrant Smuggling Bust
    K kuchinghub

13 people including two children and a local man have been detained at the Lubok Antu-Badau border area after police busted a migrant smuggling operation early Monday morning.

    border operation

The General Operations Force (PGA) Battalion 10 Sibu Intelligence Unit conducted the raid around 3:30am along an ungazetted route in Ensawang, Lubok Antu. Among those held were 12 foreign nationals — including two children — and a 27-year-old local man believed to be acting as a 'land skipper' (tekong darat).

Police tracked two vehicles used to transport the foreign nationals. The local man was driving a four-wheel-drive, while a second sedan was driven by a foreign national carrying others without valid travel documents.

Authorities seized two vehicles, an outboard boat engine, and two mobile phones linked to the smuggling operation.

The case is being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.

This latest operation highlights ongoing issues along Sarawak's border routes, where smugglers continue to use ungazetted pathways to bypass checkpoints.

  • 🏖️ Permai Rainforest Resort — Kuching's Go-To Beach & Rainforest Escape

    🏖️ Permai Rainforest Resort — Kuching’s Beach-and-Rainforest Reset

When a Kuching weekend starts to feel too full, Permai makes sense as a deliberate change of pace: leave the city, follow the road towards Santubong, and trade traffic for rainforest at the shoreline. The resort is about 35 km from central Kuching, beside Sarawak Cultural Village and Damai Central, so I would plan it as a half-day escape or an overnight stay rather than a quick city attraction.

    Permai Treehouse

The appeal is the setting, not polished luxury. Treehouses, cabins, villas and camping give different versions of the same idea: sleep close to the forest, keep the sea nearby, and accept that rustic surroundings come with more wildlife, uneven ground and fewer conveniences than a city hotel. Couples and families who want outdoor time will have more to do here than visitors looking for a resort pool, nightlife or a tightly scheduled sightseeing programme.

    Permai Cabin

📸 Beachside cabin, great for couples or small families (Source: Permai Rainforest Resort)

    Permai Villa

📸 Double-storey Villa, good for bigger groups (Source: Permai Rainforest Resort)

I would choose the room around the itinerary. A villa is the easier fit for a family or group; a treehouse is the memorable choice if the point is to wake up surrounded by greenery; camping only works if everyone is comfortable bringing the basics and using shared facilities. Room rates and activity charges change by date and package, so treat old price figures online as a rough guide and confirm the current booking total directly before paying.

The day can stay simple. The resort lists self-guided nature walks, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, beach activities and boat outings, with options that include mangrove trips, crocodile watching and dolphin watching. Some are weather- and tide-dependent, and not every activity runs every day. I would reserve the water activity that matters most, then leave room for the beach or a short forest walk instead of assuming the full list is available on arrival.

    Permai Jungle Pool

📸 Jungle pool and rainforest surroundings (Source: Permai Rainforest Resort)

The jungle pool and trails suit travellers who enjoy a little effort and a cooler swim; they may disappoint anyone expecting a manicured attraction with flat paths throughout. Mount Santubong is a separate serious undertaking, not a casual add-on to a resort stay. If that climb is your goal, check trail conditions and start early rather than treating it as another item between breakfast and kayaking.

    Permai Kayak

📸 Kayaking at Permai (Source: FB user 可爱胖的玛丽, Borneo Travellers Group)

Driving is the sensible option because the resort sits outside the city and the nearby attractions are spread out. A car also makes it easier to combine Permai with Sarawak Cultural Village or Damai Central. E-hailing may get you there, but the return trip and late-night flexibility need planning; parking is available for guests, while day visitors should confirm where to leave a vehicle and whether an activity booking is required for access.

For timing, I would give a day visitor at least four to six hours, and an overnight guest one or two nights. The official resort site is currently presenting accommodation and activities, but it does not replace a same-day confirmation of check-in, restaurant service, activity departures, beach access or temporary closures. Heavy rain, rough sea conditions, maintenance or private events can change the plan quickly.

    Permai Campsite

📸 Campsite area — bring your own tent (Source: Permai Rainforest Resort)

Permai is worth the drive when you want the landscape to be the main event and are happy to slow down. It is a weaker choice for a short, comfort-first Kuching itinerary, especially if you need guaranteed activities or hotel-style convenience. I would arrive before sunset, settle into the forest rhythm, and keep the next morning unhurried.

    🏖️ Permai Rainforest Resort:

    Permai Treehouse

Permai Rainforest Resort)

    Permai Cabin

Permai Rainforest Resort)

    Permai Villa

    Permai Jungle Pool

    Permai Kayak

    Permai Campsite
