Merdang community plans peaceful protest, demands answers over 'Bandar Riyal' naming [image: 1786410339051-merdang-protest.jpg] The indigenous community of Merdang in Kota Samarahan is preparing for a peaceful street protest, claiming the area's historical name and identity is being gradually erased through new development names. Activist Peter John Jaban, representing the community, said concerns were raised over the use of 'Bandar Riyal' and 'Taman Samarindah' names for roads, bazaar, and market in the area — while the original name Merdang is being pushed aside. "There is no Sungai Samarindah. There is no Sungai Bandar Riyal. Sungai Merdang is part of the geographical landscape and history of this area," he said. The community is demanding full answers from authorities on who proposed and approved these names, and whether the Merdang community was consulted. They are also calling for the preservation of Merdang's historical identity in official maps, records, and future development planning. The planned protest comes on International Day of the World's Indigenous People.

Abang Johari: Sarawak election can proceed with 82 seats if new ones not ready [image: 1786356655867-abang-johari-election-compressed.jpg] Sarawak's state election can proceed with the existing 82 seats if the planned addition of 17 new seats isn't ready in time, says Premier Abang Johari. Speaking after the Regency Specialist Hospital groundbreaking in Kuching today (Aug 10), he said the state will follow whatever is in place when the DUN is dissolved. "If it is 82, then 82. If it is 99, then 99. There is no problem," he told reporters. The DUN approved adding 17 new seats last July, bringing the total to 99. But with the election expected by end of this year or early 2027, time for the approval process is tight. "The time is very limited, what can we do? We just follow what is existing. The important thing is that people can vote," he said. When fully operational, the hospital is expected to create over 1,000 jobs across medical, nursing, allied health, management and support roles. Premier Abang Johari said the project shows Sarawak's transformation is attracting partners ready to invest long-term — part of the state's push to become a regional centre for advanced healthcare and medical education. The hospital will come with a comprehensive cancer centre, smart wards and advanced operating theatres.

Sematan is a small fishing village at the far west tip of Sarawak, facing the South China Sea and just a short distance from the Sarawak-Kalimantan (Indonesia) border. If you're looking for a quick weekend getaway from Kuching, this is one of the easiest options — about 1.5 hours drive, and you're at the beach. [image: 1786330919693-up0.jpg] Source: Sematan Palm Beach Resort So what's the vibe? Think relaxed, no-frills beach resort. Opened in 2004, Sematan Palm Beach Resort is well known for its long stretch of clean sandy beach. The view alone is breathtaking. What People Are Saying Over on Google Maps, the resort sits at 4.2 stars from 1,600+ reviews. Most people highlight the beach as the main draw: "The beach is clean, the water is warm, and the sunset views are amazing. Perfect for a weekend getaway." "The food at the restaurant is plentiful and tasty. Staff cheerful and attentive." — TripAdvisor reviewer "Swimming pool is great for kids. The rooms are simple but clean. Worth the drive from Kuching." [image: 1786330919769-up1.jpg] Source: Sematan Palm Beach Resort TripAdvisor gives it a 3.6 rating from 82 reviews — mostly positive, though some mention the rooms could use a refresh. The honest take: the resort is a bit dated, but the beach and location make up for it. It's a fantastic place to visit, just about 1 1/4 hour drive from Kuching. Great views from 1,000 meters above sea level." The surrounding is entirely dark and no television. The staff were friendly and helping." We were the only 2 guests checked in the resort and it was a total quiet time for both of us!"

Ever wondered if there's a place near Kuching where the air actually feels cold? I'm talking about Borneo Highlands Resort, perched about 1,000 meters above sea level on the Penrissen Range, roughly 80km from town. The drive takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, but fair warning — the last stretch is steep and winding. Most car rentals won't let you drive all the way up, so the resort arranges a 4WD pickup from the foothill for about RM53 per person round trip. {img0} Source: TripAdvisor / Borneo Highlands Resort First thing you'll notice when you arrive — it's quiet. Like, really quiet. No TV in the rooms (yes, that's intentional), no air-con because you won't need it. The temperature sits around 18-28°C, and the ceiling fan is more than enough. {img1} Source: Crisp of Life blog What makes this place interesting is the history. There's actually an 18-hole golf course here called the Hornbill Golf Course designed by Australian Neil Crafter. It used to be a proper resort destination but fell into some legal troubles with the owner. These days it operates more like a quiet getaway — not the bustling resort it once was. One visitor on TripAdvisor said: "I was perilously near Kuching. The surrounding is entirely dark and no television. The staff were friendly and helping." Another review on Agoda mentioned: "It's a fantastic place to visit, just approx 1 1/4 hour drive from Kuching town. It offers great views from some 1,000 meters above sea level." {img2} Source: TripAdvisor / Borneo Highlands Resort The highlight for most people is the Kalimantan Viewpoint — a short 5-minute trek from the resort where you can literally see Indonesia. There's a signpost marking the border. Step past it and you're technically in Kalimantan without a passport, though there's only about 3-5 feet of land before it drops 600 meters straight down. Definitely not for those afraid of heights. A blogger who visited in 2020 wrote: "We were the only 2 guests checked in the resort and it was a total quiet time for both of us!" They also noted that Celcom offers 1 bar of 4G, but Digi and U-Mobile struggled. So expect to disconnect. {img3} Source: TripAdvisor / Kalimantan Border View Point There's also the Bidayuh Spa (Jungle Spa) which is built with traditional Bidayuh ornaments and carvings. They offer treatments like the Peso Perong Therapy (traditional Bidayuh massage using homemade oil brewed with herbs, coconut, pepper, and ginger), organic facials, and foot reflexology. Practical Info: Location: Jalan Borneo Heights, Padawan, 94200 Kuching Distance: ~80km / 1hr 20min from Kuching town Temperature: 18-28°C (bring a jacket!) Contact: 019-8280 790 / 019-8290 790 Rating: 3.8/5 on Google, 7.1/10 on Agoda Pro tip: Go early morning for the sea of clouds at Kalimantan Viewpoint Would I recommend it? Yes, if you're looking for something different from the usual Kuching attractions. It's not a polished resort experience — it's a bit raw, a bit abandoned in places, but that's part of the charm. Think of it as camping with a roof. Have you been to Borneo Highlands? Drop a comment and tell us about your experience!
