Sarawak cancer centre targets 2032, with contract award expected next year
-
Sarawak’s planned 310-bed cancer centre remains at the tender procurement stage, with the contract expected to be awarded in the first quarter of 2027 and completion targeted for 2032.
The public health, housing and local government minister gave the timetable at the State Legislative Assembly on Oct 20. JKR Malaysia is handling the tender procurement, and the proposed construction period is five years. These are project targets—not an announcement that the centre has opened or that patients can register for treatment there.
The financing has two different parts. The Sarawak government is contributing RM500 million and providing a RM1 billion loan to the federal government for a project estimated to cost more than RM1.5 billion. The loan should not be read as another outright state grant.
A further implementation milestone is the RM20 million allocation for 2027 announced in the state Budget speech. That annual allocation is not the centre’s total project cost. Processing and approvals for the state’s procurement of the specified equipment categories are also underway.
For families following the project, the next concrete step is the expected letter of acceptance in early 2027. The 310 beds describe planned capacity; the reported timetable does not provide an earlier patient-service opening date.
