Mandarin is being framed as a practical trade skill for Sarawak, especially when dealing with China.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Mandarin can give Sarawakians an edge in an export-oriented economy.
Speaking in Kuching on Saturday night, he said Sarawak sells products such as oil palm and LNG to China, so language skills matter when dealing with pricing, delivery and negotiation.
He also said Bahasa Malaysia remains the national language, while English and Mandarin are useful tools for business and international trade.
The Premier also pointed to Sarawak's recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and the state's yearly RM10 million allocation for Chinese schools.
