Ever walked past that bright red corner near Wayang and Ewe Hai and thought, wait, why does this small place look so detailed?

Hong San Si, also known locally as Kueh Seng Onn, is not a big half-day attraction. It is more like a quick old-city stop: 10 to 20 minutes, slow down, look at the roof dragons, carvings, doors, ceiling details, and the small fountain area opposite.

    What people actually notice here:

Tripadvisor reviews are pretty consistent: visitors call it small, colourful, ornate, and worth a short stop, especially for the pillars, facade, roof carvings, doors and ceiling work. One recent visitor also mentioned being invited in before closing time, which sounds exactly like the kind of warm, random Kuching moment that makes a walk around the old city nicer.

Wanderlog lists it as a free-admission Taoist place at 5 Wayang Street, with usual displayed hours around 6:30am to 6:00pm. Their user highlights focus on the dragon carvings, Hokkien heritage, and photo angles, especially morning or late afternoon light.

Kuching Old Bazaar gives the deeper local context: the site sits at the Wayang-Ewe Hai junction, is managed by the Kuching Hockien Association, and oral accounts place a small shrine here as early as 1848. The yearly Seng Ong Kong birthday procession is also one of those cultural moments where this small corner suddenly becomes very alive.

DayakDaily adds the folklore layer: the Wayang Park fountain opposite is linked to the story of Rajah James Brooke and the boy deity Kong Teck Choon Ong. Whether you take the story as faith, folklore, or old-town colour, it makes the place feel less like just another photo stop.

    Practical notes:

📍 Address: 5 Wayang Street, 93000 Kuching, Sarawak
    🎟️ Entry: Free
⏱️ Best time: Morning or late afternoon for softer light
🕰️ Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes, longer if you like details
👟 Pair it with: Carpenter Street, Main Bazaar, Black Bean, Chinese History Museum, Waterfront
🙏 Reminder: It is still an active place of worship, so keep voices down and avoid blocking worshippers for photos

My take: don’t make a special drive just for this one stop. But if you are already walking the old city, this is exactly the kind of small detail that makes Kuching feel layered. Look up at the roof before you leave.

Have you ever noticed the fountain story opposite this place?
