Sarawak federal allocation rises to RM16.2bn, separate from interim grant
-
Sarawak’s federal allocation for 2027 is RM16.2 billion, up RM1.1 billion from the RM15.1 billion allocation for 2026.
The increase is about 7.3 per cent, calculated from the two announced totals. Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg welcomed it in his October 10 address at Padang Merdeka in Kuching, following the federal Budget presentation a day earlier. It is an annual budget allocation, not a report that the whole sum has already been paid or that every project is complete.
A different figure concerns Sarawak’s Interim Special Grant: it is to rise from RM600 million to RM1.5 billion starting in 2026, following the September 16 announcement. DayakDaily reported that negotiations over a permanent formula for the annual special grant remain ongoing. The interim increase does not settle that formula.
The two figures describe different fiscal arrangements and different starting years. They should not be added together and presented as a newly confirmed RM17.7 billion entitlement for 2027. For residents, the practical test is how the annual allocation translates into named projects and services, while the permanent grant formula remains a separate issue to follow.
