A walk through Kuching's old streets does not need another full meal at every stop. Sometimes I would rather save a little room for coffee and cake. Moon & Sun Coffee, at 11 Wayang Street, fits that kind of pause: close to the heritage-street route, with coffee and pastries at the centre of the visit.

The cafe officially opened on 7 June 2024, after a soft-launch period. That matters more than calling it another “new cafe”: its coffee-and-pastry identity was already in place at the beginning. Alongside espresso drinks, hand-brew coffee gives the stop a different direction from simply ordering the sweetest drink in the room.
I would keep the first order small. One coffee and one cake are enough to decide whether this becomes a longer break, rather than ordering as though it were a lunch stop.
A cake with a local connection
One part of that early story is Indulgence Batik. This no-bake cake combines a chocolate-fudge top, a cream-cheese middle and a Milo-and-biscuit base. The cut biscuits create the patterned cross-section behind the name kek batik. That is a more interesting reason to look at the cake counter than choosing a slice only for its decoration.

The pictured slice is another example from the cafe's cake selection, not the layered batik cake described above.
For me, the pairing is the point. With a chocolate-and-biscuit cake, I would lean towards a straightforward coffee rather than turning both halves of the order into dessert. If a coffee-and-tea combination sounds more appealing, dirty chai brings espresso, masala chai and milk together in one drink. Those are two quite different ways to approach the same coffee-and-cake break.

Make it a pause, not another packed itinerary
I would put Moon & Sun between the old-street wandering and the next proper meal. The appeal is a specific combination: a Wayang Street address, a cafe built around coffee and pastries, and a batik-cake story that connects the sweet side of the order to Malaysia rather than to a generic cafe checklist.
