A planned RM1.5 million Festival Square at Lebuh Java would add 1,230 square metres of public space beside Kuching's waterfront, with seating, traditional games and facilities for different age groups. DBKU will undertake the project with PETRONAS Sarawak as its strategic partner. The plans were outlined at an October 8 press conference at Lebuh Java, with construction expected to take eight months and work expected to begin soon. That is a construction estimate, not an announced opening date. The square is intended to give residents a dedicated place for major celebrations while complementing the existing Kuching Waterfront. Planned features include a smart toilet, greywater recycling, solar power and a cat landmark. These remain features of the proposed development, not facilities already available for visitors. For people who use the waterfront, the practical change would be an additional shared space rather than a replacement for the existing promenade. A firm start date, opening date and arrangements around the work site were not set out in the announcement.
