Fort Margherita is the white fort most people photograph from Kuching Waterfront. If you ask me, the better plan is to cross the river and understand why it was built, instead of treating it as part of the skyline only. Charles Brooke, Sarawak's second White Rajah, completed the fort in 1879 and named it after his wife, Margaret. Its position on the north bank gave it a clear view of river traffic approaching Kuching, while its English-castle design made it stand out from the surrounding landscape. The details are more interesting when you slow down: the river-facing position, controlled entrance and walls were practical security, not just decorative architecture. I would not frame that period as a simple royal adventure. The gallery is more useful when read alongside the experiences of Sarawak's communities, colonial power and the political changes that followed. For anyone trying to understand old Kuching, the exhibition gives the stop its real weight. I would allow at least an hour rather than rushing in for one photo.
