Sarawak sets equal Sukma and Para Sukma medal incentives, payout expected this year
-
Sarawak’s Sukma and Para Sukma medallists are to receive the same incentive rates: RM15,000 for gold, RM5,000 for silver and RM3,000 for bronze. Payment is expected before the end of 2026, with November preferred rather than fixed.
Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah outlined the rates to reporters after his ministerial winding-up at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Oct 20. He said the rates were unchanged from the previous Games hosted by Sarawak and confirmed that Para Sukma athletes would be treated equally.
Team events will use a separate calculation formula, while record-breakers will receive additional incentives. That means the headline medal rates should not be used to calculate every team member’s entitlement. The update did not provide the team formula or the amounts for records.
The total payout is estimated to exceed RM1 million. Sarawak finished fourth at Sukma Selangor 2026, held from Aug 15 to 24, with 41 gold, 40 silver and 62 bronze medals. Those results relate to Sukma; they are not a combined tally for Sukma and Para Sukma. Athletes awaiting payment now have the announced rates and an intended year-end timeframe, but not a confirmed November payment date.
