This is one of those Kuching spots people forget because it sits quietly across the river. No loud signboard energy, no shopping mall noise, just orchids, shade, and that slow Petra Jaya afternoon heat.
Small note before anyone drives over right now: the latest official DBKU page lists the garden as temporarily closed for upgrading works, and Malaysia Traveller also marked it closed from 1 May 2025 until further notice. So treat this as a bookmark post first. Call DBKU or check the gate before going.

Source: Malaysia TravellerWhat makes this place nice is not a dramatic wow moment. It is more like a 30 to 60 minute slow walk, especially if the orchids are in bloom. Sarawak Tourism Board describes it as a 15.4-acre garden with more than 75 orchid species, including the Normah Orchid. DBKU's own page goes even more plant-nerd: about 75,000 orchid plants and 65 genera, with Borneo orchids like Lady Slipper and Phalaenopsis Bellina.
From the visitor side, the reviews are mixed in a very believable way. Trip.com has it at 4.7/5 from a small set of reviews, with one visitor saying the best part is that admission is free. Tripadvisor has more than 400 reviews and a recent Aug 2025 review called it quiet, relaxing and easy to access, with orchids mainly displayed in pots. But another Sept 2025 visitor warned that the gate notice said it had been closed to the public since May 2025.
Malaysia Traveller's take is probably the most useful if you are planning: pleasant, conveniently located, free, but hot and sticky, with mosquitoes around. That sounds about right for this part of Kuching. Bring water, repellent, and do not expect Cameron Highlands weather.

- Location: Lorong Foo Chow, Kampung Astana / near Petra Jaya side of the river
- Usual admission: free
- Latest status: check first, because official DBKU lists temporary closure for upgrading works
- Best way from town when open: cross via Darul Hana Bridge, then walk past the Astana area, or drive over
- Best timing: morning or late afternoon, not noon unless you enjoy being steamed
- Bring: water, mosquito repellent, cap or umbrella
My honest take: when it reopens properly, this is not a must-rush attraction for first-timers who only have one day in Kuching. But for locals, plant lovers, photographers, or visitors who already did Waterfront and Fort Margherita, it is a nice gentle stop.
