The Ranee Museum is small, focused and easy to miss inside Kuching's Old Court House. I would visit it for one personal story from the Brooke era, not expect a complete history of Sarawak.

The permanent exhibition centres on Margaret de Windt, who became the Ranee of Sarawak after marrying Charles Brooke. It uses portraits, writing, music and objects to show how she understood and presented her life in Sarawak.

That narrow focus is both the museum's strength and its limit. It can make a historical period feel human, but one elite biography cannot represent the many communities living under Brooke rule. I would read it as one perspective, then balance it with the broader social and cultural material at Borneo Cultures Museum.

Who should make time for it?

It suits visitors who enjoy letters, portraits, family histories and quiet rooms more than large interactive galleries. Because the exhibition is compact, it also works well when rain interrupts an old-town walk.
