The suspects were travelling by train from Bangkok to Narathiwat when Thai railway authorities detained them at Hat Yai station after discovering the drugs concealed in their luggage and backpacks.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the three are Sarawakians and that Malaysian police are working closely with Thai authorities.

"Thai police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) have shared preliminary details of the arrest with us. We maintain close cooperation with the Thai authorities," he told Bernama.

The seizure was the result of a joint operation involving Hat Yai Police narcotics unit, railway police, tourist police, and Thailand's ONCB (Region 9).

Preliminary investigations indicate the methamphetamine was intended for a drug trafficking syndicate operating in Malaysia. The three suspects were reportedly promised RM8,000 each to transport the drugs.
