Sarawak has welcomed a proposal for the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) to set up an academic presence in the state.

Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawak should stay open to public and private universities that can help strengthen human capital.

He said any institution that can improve skills, knowledge and access to quality education should be viewed positively.

IIUM Rector Professor Emeritus Datuk Osman Bakar said the university has been approached by Sarawak alumni about the idea. He said IIUM is looking at options such as specialised academic programmes before moving into a full campus.
