If the morning is free, I would head out to Green Road for Sin Lian Shin: a neighbourhood kopitiam where kolo mee, rather than a long café menu, gives the stop its purpose. It makes more sense as a proper breakfast outing than as a quick detour squeezed between appointments.

The family's noodle story began in 1963, when Chee Pak Fong started making kolo mee after the previous generation moved away from selling steamed meat buns. Green Road was becoming a residential and commercial neighbourhood; a more substantial breakfast suited the people arriving around it. That shift from buns to noodles is a useful way to understand this shop: the dish grew with its neighbourhood, not out of a tourist attraction.

The next generation learned the work after school and on weekends, beginning with drinks before stepping in at the noodle station. The family recipe includes its own seasonings and house-made char siew, while the noodles come from a supplier. I like that distinction. The story here is not that every component is handmade, but that the family has kept control of what goes into the bowl.

For a first order, I would start with the regular kolo mee and ask for mee lurus—the straight-noodle option—before trying mee merah, the red version. Kway teow and wantons give a shared table another direction without turning breakfast into an oversized food crawl. Pork and char siew are part of the offering, so this is not a halal breakfast stop.

Give the meal some breathing room. Green Road's school-and-shop setting brings breakfast traffic, and parking near the café is limited. I would choose an early morning with no tight onward booking, rather than promise myself a bowl and a departure time. Service is a morning affair, generally from 6.30am to around lunchtime; Tuesday is the regular rest day.

I would keep the order simple and let this be the morning's main food stop. There is plenty of Kuching beyond the old-town breakfast circuit; this bowl has its own family and neighbourhood behind it.
