The Prime Minister and Finance Minister announced the funding when presenting the budget in the Dewan Rakyat on October 9. The 682 figure covers the announced programme; it is not a count of schools in Sarawak alone.

A separate allocation for repairs and maintenance across all types of schools will double from RM1 billion to RM2 billion. The dilapidated-school upgrade programme and wider maintenance funding should therefore not be read as the same pot or added together as a confirmed Sarawak entitlement.

For families and school communities in Sarawak, the announcement sets out the scale and regional priority of the upgrade programme, but does not identify which local schools will receive work or when their projects will finish. Those school-level allocations and construction schedules will determine how the funding changes pupils’ day-to-day learning conditions.
