I would place it in a slow old-town loop, stopping first at the date carved into the facade: 1886.

The tower appeared after the 1884 Kuching fire destroyed much of the area between Carpenter Street and Main Bazaar. It looked like a fort, yet it was never used as one. Instead, the two-storey building became a Public Dispensary serving the adjoining hospital until 1947, then moved through Labour Office and Subordinate Courts Registry duties. That sequence turns the “castle” into a record of everyday public services.

Look for the rounded corner towers, the inscribed date and the compact footprint. The building was later used by the Sarawak Craft Council, and the former café identity still appears in older visitor material; the current Sarawak Tourism Board description identifies it as a Sarawak Craft Council headquarters. I would therefore enjoy the exterior without assuming the inside is a public museum or café today.

From the Round Tower, continue towards the Textile Museum, Old Court House and Waterfront. The walk is mostly about reading how one civic building changed jobs as Kuching changed around it, not collecting another grand colonial photo. Allow 20–40 minutes for the tower and nearby stops; central e-hailing is easy, while parking is more useful at the start of a wider old-town route.

This is a good stop for first-time visitors who enjoy layers, details and a walkable heritage core. Travellers who need a large, fully interactive museum should keep moving to the Borneo Cultures Museum. Check the current exterior access and any public opening notice on the day, since an active office can close its doors even when the building remains visible from the street.
